So the question will be, what can a user do to limit or eliminate the problem (snopping/data collection) in Win10? And "just don't use Win10/use <insert something>" answer will not work for me.
That's what you signed up for. You can trust and control your software, or you can use proprietary software. You can't have both. Policy can be changed at any time, and you have to rely on the good will of corporations. The only thing corporations care about is a successful quarter for investors. You're only a detail.
Proprietary software, also called nonfree software, means software that doesn't respect users' freedom and community. A proprietary program puts its developer or owner in a position of power over its users. This power is in itself an injustice.

The point of this page is that the initial injustice of proprietary software often leads to further injustices: malicious functionalities.

Power corrupts; the proprietary program's developer is tempted to design the program to mistreat its users. (Software whose functioning mistreats the user is called malware.) Of course, the developer usually does not do this out of malice, but rather to profit more at the users' expense. That does not make it any less nasty or more legitimate.

Yielding to that temptation has become ever more frequent; nowadays it is standard practice. Modern proprietary software is typically a way to be had.

What's what happen when you expect everything to be "free". YT, updates(IOS/android/w10(m)), webmail, cloud, MS office, apps, news...everything. Companies have to find ways to make money and Google take the lead to the new age of data mining. You see the amount of ads on news site? Because people don't buy newspaper anymore.

I think we already payed for the operating system.

Apparently not that many people care. I mean Chrome is the most used browser isn't it? It collects as much if not more of your browsing activity compared to Edge.

I still use Windows 7. I tried Win10 once on another device and grew angry in the first 10 seconds. Never tried Win8.

I see no file explorer ads

It seems not everyone is getting them. Not sure if it's based on lack of telemetry or if it's just random. They're probably just testing the waters at this point and don't have actual advertisers lined up.

You can disable it though.

Win7 may be just fine for you, but I will say 10 seconds is probably not enough time to evaluate any piece of software, let alone an OS. :) I will agree on 8 though, I used it a fair amount on my daughter's pc, and had no desire to move to it from win7.

Apparently, most of MSFT tracking crap made its way to Windows 7 as well with latest bunch of updates...

So Windows10 is kinda like my phone. When I dl an app from the store and it says this app has access too 'blah, blah, blah, and blah" it's really no different.
No different? This applies to the whole freaking OS, not individual apps. And unlike Android permissions, it's not at all obvious what they're collecting unless you go hunting for the information... Also, while it might "break" the app, or some of its functions, you can turn an various Android app's permissions on and off (easily) either permanently, or when you do or don't need the specific functions that demand them. (Not saying that's necessarily convenient, but at least it's possible...)

Thanks for the link. I've been wondering what people are seeing. I wonder if it's a case of my version (being Pro) doesn't have it. I also wonder if it's just OneDrive, which makes sense if you're not signed up for it. As it's space, it would make sense for it to be mentioned in file explorer.. not sure if they're going about it the right way, but it might explain why I and others may not have seen it.

Paid.

And in order to keep Bill Gates in billionaire status, the sale of an OS is not nearly enough. He has people to pay, not the least of which is himself.

I think only 20% of Bill's net worth(80ish billions) tight MS right now, he be fine if MS disappear today I am sure.

Bills actually trying to give it away.
MS takes way too much crap for this and apple, Samsung, google all get free passes for some reason.
Did Jobs attempt to give his fortune away?
Android and apple devices are collecting health data about you with fitness apps. I can't think of anything more personal than that.

I kind of figured they would start doing that. I disabled updates around the same time win10 and the practically forced upgrade came out as a precaution. The only windows machine I have is for gaming, I don't really go online with it other than for game specific stuff like updates for games etc. Though really I probably should put that machine on my external network as for all I know they've had spy stuff in it all along and people just became aware of it with 10 given it's more aggressive. Suppose a packet sniffer could revel that though.

Lol there's also an IoT dildo that has a bunch of security exploits. It even has a camera. (why??!!!?) I joked about IoT sex toys before, but I never realized it would really happen.
Why? Oh come on think about it. Guys can pay some $$/min to a stranger on the internet to get a view they've probably never had before lol.
