I'm in the market for a non-widescreen thin and light laptop top be used primarily for surfing the web while sitting on the couch/coffeetable. I don't want to spend too much over $1500. After a good bit of research I've decided on the Fujitsu Lifebook S7000 with the following configuration:
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725
integrated Bluetooth wireless
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
14.1" SXGA+ (non-Crystal View) TFT display
2 256 MB memory module
60 GB hard drive (4200 rpm)
Modular DVD/CD-RW combo drive
Modem, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet, and Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g)
Integrated touch pad and Quick Point
$1599
I could have gotten the Dell 600M a bit cheaper, but I'm sure the Fujitsu is built better, not to mention a lot lighter. Plus it was hard finding a NON-WIDESCREEN laptop! I'm not planning on watching movies, I never have two windows open side by side, so widescreen never appealed to me.
I did kind of want XP Pro, but the additional $100 bucks was just not worth it. And it really doesn't have any features that I'll be missing on a laptop.
I guess the only question I have is should I spend the extra $80 on a 5400 rpm drive? Is the speed going to be worth the extra noise? heat? money? especially when I'm just web browsing and checking my email?
