Hey. In the last few years I've tried about every brand of CD-R that offered a special or rebate. Scanning the weekly flyers from BestBuy and CompUSA has become something of a serious habit. In that time, the only brands that I've had any real (re-occuring) trouble with on my ACER 2x2x6 (Now an Plex..I mean Iomega 12/10/32 as of this past week) were with some Maxells I had over a year ago and a pack of Pacific Digitals. I have no idea if the media was actually MFG by someone else, but I stay away from those brands now. Ummm, what was this thread about again...? Oh yeah. Well maybe $19.99 is a "hot deal" for Taiyo Yuden media, but I usually look for, and find, better prices than that. My current unused media includes 50 packs from TDK($10), Memorex($5), CompUSA($5), and FujiFilm($10), and 10 packs from Samsung(0.00), PNY(?), and Sony($.99). Prices after rebates/saving. Taxes not included. :) It's going to take me a while to use what I have, but I'm still looking for more. :p
DM.

PS. Don't ask me where I got them from. Most were rebates no longer available, but not all.

I never had an issue with imations, but then I never burn PSX games... In my ignorance I thought they were fairly good just because they were platinums...
How do you know what factory makes what CDRs before actually opening the package; as companies such as Imation get theirs from Taiwan, Japan, and the US. Is is true that anything that says "made (as opposed to packaged, etc) in Japan" would be Taiyo Yudens?

Busmaster11,
I have had alot of experience with the Imations, and your thoughts on where the package says they were made directly applies to who made the CDR's. Every package of Imations that I have opened, that have said Made in Japan, have been Taiyo Yudens, while Made in USA have been Ricoh's, and Made in Taiwan have been CMC Magnetics. Every recent (Within the last Year or so) 50 or 100 pack spindle from Imation I have seen have been CMC Magnetics. I used to buy the 25 pack spindles that said Made in Japan whenever I could find them, but haven't seen them around for awhile.

There is a program called CDR Identifier out that is a nice little utility for reading the ATIP on a blank CDR to tell who the manufacturer is, but I don't have a link for it at the moment.

I pretty much believe that with CD-R's, you get what you pay for... And while even the cheapest CD-R's will burn okay on a good burner, the question is how long will they last.

Thanks Bill_n_Opus and RaysMD for the input on the TDK's, I wish I had bought more of those TDK's for $10 per 50 pack, I have been pretty happy with them.

It used to be that if you saw "Made in Japan" then you were assured of a good mfg, like Taiyo Yuden. It's probably still true today.

"Made in Taiwan" is probably still a good indication that you have to be buyer beware for the mfg. Whether Ritek, CMC Magnetics or Gigastorage among others.

Whenever I see "Made in Taiwan" i'm always skeptical of the quality unless I hear otherwise.

For example:

When the FujiFilm 80min cdrs came out with their rebates and all I thought that they were cheap media. Then when you see the label and it says "Made in Japan" it should have been a sign to denote otherwise. Of course, they have been ID'd as TY's.

I read somewhere on Dejanews that CDRIdentifier isn't as accurate as most people would like to believe. I don't have the link but it was quite informative (search for cdrecordable and atip) and even though I'd take the TY when I can get them, the others suit me well enough. the CMC magnetics, I must agree are pretty bad. I have like 10 cds that have huge smears in them. Obviously, the data is unreadable. =(

the 50pack of tdk cdr's i got with the tdk velocd deal werent made by tdk according to their atip info ... i forgot, but it was by one of those less desirable ones (ritek?). otoh, the pny's which i got from bestbuy were from a "better" manufacturer. i can check tonite if anyone's interested.

A good rule of thumb, is if they're made in the US or Japan, their good, if made in Taiwan, they suck. Not an absolute rule, but somewhat useful.

Two other programs that will give you mfr. info are Plextor Manager 2000 (if you have a plextor drive) and Exact Audio Copy (if it supports writing on your drive).

Link to the article about recording speed vs. error rate: http://www.emedialive.com/EM2000/starrett5.html

BTW, I had a bad batch of TDK Certified Plus from their USA plant. The reflective layer comes off very easily. Many of the discs burned come out full of static at the end. That's my last time using those supposedly good CDRs.

enjoy.

Hey saimike,

I recently checked out some Pny's and they came up as being mfr'd by Ricoh, which is supposed to be pretty good.

i highly doubt that any pny cdrs are good, i picked up a spindle ages ago, its a 50 pack of 80min for $9.00 at staples, and i got nothing but coasters, and when i burned at 1x, it worked, but it took ages for my cdrom drive to read it, tried these on 3 diff burners and 5 different dvd/cdrom drives, they are a load of crap dont waste ur time on em, if anything u are gonna buy cheap cdrs go with kingston, although no one said they are the best cdr's either

I've had worst luck with Kingston than anything... one good burn per 3 coasters or so on my ricoh 7060s... But hey, everyone has a different preference I suppose. Me, I used to like Ricoh, Kodak and HP. I still do, but they're too expensive so I went to Memorex and imation...

Think I'll stick to Fuji now for the Taiyo Yudens...

the manufacturer for Pny CDRs will vary quite a bit. One CD someone sent me was a TY. Most of the time they are crap. If it's a TY lot, then it's not.

Here's a rundown on manufacturer quality, though keep in mind that a brand (like Pny) can change the manufacturer often:

*The most common factories of quality CD-R's are:

MANUFACTURER (BRAND NAME)
-Mitsui Chemicals (Mitsui, Hewlett Packard, Philips)
-Taiyo Yuden Company Limited (Taiyo Yuden, Fujifilm, 3M, Sony,
Philips, Imation)
-TDK Corporation (TDK, 3M, Pioneer, Yamaha)
-Kodak Japan Limited (Kodak, BASF)
-Ricoh Company (Ricoh, KAO)
Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation (Verbatim, Traxdata)
-Pioneer Video Corporation (Pioneer)

*factories of medium quality CD-R's:

Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. (Maxell)

*factories of low (=cheaper) quality CD-R's:

Princo Corporation (Princo)
Gigastorage Corporation (Gigastorage)
Lead Data Inc. (Lead Data, Targa, Lenco)
Fornet International Pte Ltd.
CDA Dateträger Albrechts GmbH (CDA, FNAC)
Ritek Co. (Arita, BASF, Samsung, Memorex, Targa,
Rimax, Traxdata)
CMC Magnetics Corporation (Imation)

There was a discussion some time ago on alt.comp.periphs.cdr about the accuracy of the ATIP on a cdr being inaccurate.

This is true for the most part. The accuracy of the ATIP relies on the mfg'er to print the current ATIP info on the right cdrs. It's been shown to be inaccurate at times.

The problem is that when a mfg'er swaps platters for pressing sometimes they forget to swap the ATIP info as well. Especially in this day of vast OEM factories. Mistake happens ... don't really know how often though.

I've got several spindles of 8x rated, 650 MB capacity, GQ (Great Quality) disks which were identified as CMC Magnetics. Never had a single problem burning to them; however, I've recently run into problems with the top silver coating CHIPPING and PEELING away rendering the disk useless so beware of this brand (not to imply that all CMC Magnetics products are this way)...

FujiFilm 80minute CDR's are definately Taiyo Yuden's and of the highest quality. And if you have an OfficeMax B&M store, they are on sale for 19.99 with a $10 mail in rebate (purchase must be made by 1/13/01, so hurry. This offer is only good in the B&M store, not their online site.

Anyone know of a source for the paper sleeves for these CDs? I like the ones with the see-thru window on the front.

Because their info is somewhat outdated and/or that particular info that you are reading does not apply to the FujiFilm 80 min cdrs which are presently OEM'd to Taiyo Yuden.

Things change quite rapidly in the cd media world and OEM mfg'ing changes from year to year. You never know, the FujiFilm 80min cdrs may be made by a crap company next year when they realize that they can save some money getting someone else other than TY to make them.

The fuji 80 min spindles are indeed TY, I compared em to the TY disc I had, and was an exact match.
