Fuel Surcharges on Speeding Tickets

It's a tax for a place that isn't allowed to create a new tax. Last I checked if you get pulled over for doing 80 in a 65 in Virginia, they have a $1050 "Civil Remedial Fee" that is tacked ON TOP of the $2500 max fine. Remember, it's not a tax, nor a fine. But a fee. Thus the vote required to make it happen is virtually nil. The IRS should have a 10% gross income "tax processing fee" so Congress can look great when they cut taxes by 2%.

Then they need to add the fuel surcharge to everyone who is arrested, because the cops had to drive there to get it. $12 to pay for the fuel it takes to 'catch up' w/ a speeder? Just BS spewing from their mouths. Are they going to add $12 surcharge if the cop has to pull off the side of the road to pull you over for a fix-it ticket? I mean, if you didnt have anything wrong w/ your vehicle he coulda just sat there idleing wasting gas.

Food for thought:
Crown vic probably gets 10MPG in pursuit.
$12 probably buys 2.5 gallons worth of gas
If a cop clocks you at 80, you only get one ticket regardless of how long you've been doing 80.

...can you drive for 25 miles at 80 with the cop on your tail because you're paying for his gas?

I dont see an issue with this.

The only issue I'll have with this is if they add this surcharge to a ticket received from one of those speeding-traps where the officer runs in the middle of the road and makes you pull over.

I have issues with that kind of speed traps period, fuel surcharge or no fuel surcharge. They pick a car from traffic semi-randomly and do some "creative accounting" calculating your alleged speed.

Sorry for the slight off-topic.

Be smart, look out for cops. I got on a highway the other day going about 72 - 73 coming down the ramp, and a cop passed me. I was focused on merging in instead of looking behind me. I slowed down to just around 70 or a little under as I saw him and he passed me at least at close to 80. Anyways, this was at midnight and traffic was very sparse, but there was this idiot who kept speeding in front of me. I decided to push back to 75 cuz the cop was going pretty fast, and I still noticed the cop tailing that speeder and he was still pulling away from me. Some people just don't realize it, but the cop tailed him for a good 3 - 4 exits (10th street SJ Downtown till Bird Ave) before he flicked on his lights. I laughed because even going 75, I was barely catching up to the rest of the cars there, so clearly the cop didnt care most cars were doing 70-75 but if you gotta stick out doing 80+ when a cop is tailing you pretty close behind you have to be retarded.

You can try, but you'll get more than one ticket. 😉 See my previous post.

In the story, they say that the budget for fuel was over $3,000 less than last year.

The story also gives revenue projections.

Can I charge the police a fuel surcharge for setting up those useless "seat belt checkpoints" and therefore making traffic slow to a crawl and wasting my fuel?

I'm in Georgia and our local police are doing $15 a pop.

there also charging extra if you smash up a few cop cars, plow your car though someone's house and shoot back at them during the high-speed case with copter overhead. then there's the part where they search your car and find drugs, weapons and a dead body in the trunk.. yep.. there surcharges for all that too.

they had one of the city's councilmen on TV last night. O'reilly asked him if prices go down are they going to reduce the fee. the guy tried to dance around it but finally admited that if they go down there is nothing in the law to reverse it.

so when asked why they don't raice the cost of the ticket he said they would have to go through the goverment. with this they can just do it.

Cutting the red tape eh?

Their costs have gone up, but this is simply a way to get more income that will probably exceed the increase in costs. I'm reminded of the delivery service for the tent I rented for my son's graduation party. 20x30 tent takes all of 15 minutes to set up; but they "had to double our old cost of deliver and set-up because gas has gone up so much." The increase in gas would have increased their costs by about $4. They raised their prices by $40 for the service. (and thus, lost out on the profit they would have otherwise made on set-up as well; I set it up myself in 15 minutes.)

I just heard that the police in Holly Springs, Georgia will now add a $12 surcharge onto speeding tickets to defray the cost of catching up with the culprits. This is pretty unheard of isn't it? Or, is it just the beginning of a national movement by law enforcement?
