Fuel Door vs. Exhaust?

I had a hard time finding my exhausts...like I had to look under and behind the bumper (on my knees) to see them.

Anyways, Left Exhaust, Right Fuel door

Lincoln: Fuel door on passenger side, dual exhaust.

951: Fuel door on passenger side, exhaust outlet on driver's side.

914: Fuel door in front trunk (literally, have to open the front trunk to get to the fuel filler), exhaust outlet on driver's side.

Fuel door is on the right, exhaust is in the middle.
What kind of car has exhaust in the middle?
At least some Boxsters do.
Some BMWs did, so did the Jaguar E-type, and new Minis do. I'm sure there are some others out there too.

But in my case, it is something you rarely see, a Crossfire.

and there is a reason for that too 😉

but in fact ive seen quite a few some kid on campus used to drive one during summer iirc.

That makes sense if you think about it. They don't want to route the hot exhaust pipes next to the gas tank. Gas tank is usually close to where the fuel filler is.

Gas tank extends the full width of the car. The exhaust goes right under the tank in any front-engine car, regardless of the side the filler door is on.

but however, if you think about it, it might go deeper than just the tank, yes the tank is above the exhaust (heat shield) however what happens if the filler bursts and is over the exhaust, then you have issues, but if its across from the exhaust its chances, although still there, are much less than if it were to be above the exhaust.

im not sure if its just tradition to do it this way, or what, its just a very interesting observation

Something would have to be very, very wrong for the exhaust pipe to be hot enough to ignite a gasoline fire that far back from the engine. Heck, in most cases even the headers don't get hot enough to ignite fuel.

On my truck, the drivers side is all fuel tank. From under the driver's seat to about 2' short of the bumper. That is like 8' of fuel tank. the other side is exaust. 2 cats and 2 mufflers take up a good amount of space.

Dodge Ram
Domestic vehic1 Gas Fill: drivers
Domestic vehic1 Gas Tank: drivers
Domestic vehic1 Ex: Pass

Suzuki Sidekick
Import vehic2 Gas Fill: Passenger
Importvehic2 Gas Tank: Rear 100% width
Importvehic2 Ex: Passenger

Honda Prelude
Import vehic3 Gas Fill: Passenger
Import vehic3 Gas Tank: Basicly the rear seat. 100% width
Import vehic3 Ex: Passenger

New Mini-S. Don't think the non-s gets the center pipe.

1993 Dodge Dakota
Fuel filler neck on the driver's side
Exhaust on the passenger side

2002 Saturn L100
Fuel filler neck on the passenger side
Exhaust on the driver's side

2002 Chrysler Sebring LXi convertible
Fuel filler neck on the driver's side
Exhaust on the passenger's side

I think the fuel door is on the opposite side.

I'd like to see a listing to figure out which kinds of cars have the gas on which side.

My Grand Am and wife's Mustang had it on the passenger side but our Durango has it on the drivers side.

88 accord, fuel door drivers side, exhaust passengers side
01 f150, fuel door drivers side, dual exhaust (i think, if not, i KNOW there's an exhaust pipe right behind the passenger tire)
02 eclipse, fuel door passengers side, exhaust passengers side

my 68 oldsmobile cutlass had duals that ended right before the rear diff, and the filler neck was behind the rear license plate 😉

Old VW Beetles. Two of them, which makes them sport cars, right?

Contour SVT has dual exhaust, one pipe each side. The fuel door is on the passenger side. That doesn't really help though. I'm pretty sure the non SVT setup is exhaust on drivers side fuel door passnger side.
