EA and DICE have timed exclusivity deal

A lot has been said about Mantle over the last couple of weeks, AMD’s new API has a fair share of supporters, but detractors are not lacking either.

One of the biggest concerns voiced by industry watchers was the apparent lack of support for the new API from leading developers. Sure, DICE and EA are on board, but the rest of the industry didn’t appear to be on board.

There seems to be a very good reason for that. According to Forbes, DICE and EA have a “timed exclusivity agreement from a PR standpoint.” However, AMD told Forbes that several more developers should be announced in November, at AMD’s APU 13 conference.

EA currently has more than 15 Frostbite games in development, with Mantle support. These include big titles like new instalments of NFS, Command and Conquer, Mass Effect and Mirror’s Edge.

AMD is promising “several” new developers at APU 13, but who are they? Are they big or small players? If we were to speculate, we’re place our bets on somewhat bigger developers with a big footprint on the console scene, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

http://gearnuke.com/principal-technical-director-activision-says-well-support-amds-mantle/

Activision appears to also expect to have to implement Mantle support. Likely on the console side of things, we may see it come over with some of their titles on PC. Although Activision is pretty much a light-weight on the PC side. None of their titles are that popular on the PC platform.

Call of Duty is huge on console, but a joke on PC, has a very small user base in comparison. Meanwhile the Battlefield playerbase on the PC dwarfs the Call of Duty player base, while on console CoD is much bigger than Battlefield.

Need For Speed: Rivals locked at 30 fps for PC, X360, PS3. Great success... NOT.

So it's locked at 30 then?

its going to be 30 on all platforms; which I believe includes PS4 and X1 - its because of alldrive....whether devs unlock it or community unlocks it is another story. I'd put money on community unlocking it.

Need for Speed hasn't been the same for along time; its popular but nothing like GT; Forz....but from everything looks like NFS is one of the last to be developed on last gen platform....the 360/PS3...

Well, I think what Ibra was trying to point out is saying, what is the advantage of Mantle in that case if the framerates are locked at 30fps?

Mantle is being rolled out with BF4 then intergrated into Frostbyte 3 engine......

This does use frostbyte 3 engine; but also was built for last gen platform. I do expect it to be updated and hopefully unlocked from 30 fps on PC; PS4 and X1....

but I can see why they locked it for now with alldrive world - basically its one giant world; single player and multiplayer all rolled into one.

BF4 rolls out mantle; we'll find out other engines Mantle will be part of in November along with other developers using it; Activision will use it; along with UBsoft *even with deal with Nvidia in place*.

I would be surprised and I'll own up if AMD doesn't already have all major engines already lined up to use mantle along with most publishers.

We know Chris will use it for his new space game...its actually very interesting time again in computing.

Well, that's one game I'm not buying. 30FPS in a racing game? You've gotta be kidding me. I'd understand forcing it to be a multiple of 30, but just straight 30 makes no.... sense.

Yeah, No way I am touching a game with a 30FPS limit. One of the other NFS games had a 30FPS limit. I think it was Run, but EA quickly removed it on a patch and the next game did not have a 30FPS limit, so there may still be hope.

So how much did EA pay AMD to have exclusive use of Mantle? :hmm:

Isn't Mantle targeted towards mainstream hardware? Less impressive but makes sense. I heard mantle isnt gonna do much for a 3930k/4770k and 7970/290x, and that the largest improvements are going to be seen on mid-range CPUs like mainstream laptops and mobile gpus or mid level desktop cpus. Still early speculation at this point.

It makes sense. I doubt AMD would put that much effort into if only one dev used it. Then again, nvidia does that with physX lol.

U have own this thread bro.U are right we will not see so much difference on Ultra End PC but maybe 10 to 12% not more than that.

Isn't rivals Xbox360 and PS3 anyway?

I don't see what AMD or Mantle have to do with that.

Mantle will enable lower power GPU's (ie: APU's) to run the game far better than they otherwise would.

If AMD is smart they'll develop and then market Mantle as THEE way to easily port multi-platform games. It's quick cash and increases marketshare. We'll see if they're competent enough to do it.

Yeah, that makes sense. Top end hardware will still get a boost, but the whole point I imagine of the API is to make lower end hardware function better since the majority of buyers are not going to spend more than $150 on a gpu or high end pc.

90% are the mid range pc user so they are the real target if mantle succeed.

You're missing the more than awesome Dark Souls then.

Actually there is a mod to remove the 30fps limit on PC. I played the whole game with a 60fps cap. It doesn't hold 60fps 100% of the time when you use the graphics enhancement at the same time due to the engine but it was never below 50fps.
