7970 was the same, plus it is the same company there is no reason to separate the two as if they were two different entities.

We're not discussing product performance, we're discussing cooperation pricing strategy.

If you are referring to 7970 introduction price, it was priced roughly on par with GTX 580 3GBs. You'd probably have to go back past the 4800 series to find some instances where performance was questionable for the starting MSRP.
