Thieves plunder in Charley's aftermath

After the hurricane ended, the looting began.

Among the first targets, officials said, was the Charlotte Harbor Fire Department. Firefighters arrived early Saturday to find that their computers had been swiped in the night.

But at least one guy isn't going to put up with this BS...
Down the road in the park sat Vietnam veteran Gary Snyder, drinking Miller High Life. Snyder, who was among only a handful in Harborview who rode out the storm, said residents were anxious about looters, but he was prepared.

"If I see 'em, I'll shoot 'em," he said. "They're gone. I'll tell 'em I had a flashback."

Those who go looking for trouble are often no problem for those who are prepared for it.

In this situation I have no problem blaming the victim. There should have been a 12 gauge shotgun in their version of a Hurricane Survival Kit.

Well...

Now we all know what would happen if somehow our local and/or federal governments went tits up.

I need a gun. Seriously. I was thinking about it the other day, and I was trying to think of what I would use for protection if me or my family was in danger. I was in the kitchen, so the obvious thing was a knife. But, what if they had a gun?

Then I thought about the chainsaw in the garage. But what if they had a gun?

I need a gun. lol...

:p

Well, that's only if people's homes were uninhabitable, and thus they wouldn't be around to watch things. What are the odds of all of that happening at once?

I know what you mean; I think about that too sometimes. But in the end I would imagine that having a gun around actually may put you in more danger. I don't know, and I don't think anyone really does, because the statistics are all gathered by zealots from either side of the gun control debate. In the end, if you want a gun, just get one. :p

Never bring a knife to a gunfight.

What about the thread last week of what you would do if the ATM machine started spitting out $20's.
Lots of people had no problem taking the cash and running off. I wonder what the thoughts of those
people are about looting?

After all, the stuff is just laying there isn't it?

Heh, I think it has to do with the mentality behind the whole "robin hood" thing. Somehow, we feel less guilty stealing from an institution that deals with money than from fellow neighbors.

Just found it funny how stealing is stealing and that some people differ between
"good stealing" and "bad stealing".

Maybe folks who are pacifists change their minds when they become victims :)

Lets put it this way. During the LA riots, the cops refused to go into some areas of the most intense rioting and looting. In those areas, there were two kinds of storekeepers: Those with guns, and those who swept up their front windows. I dont like to sweep :D

I lived in Los Angeles during the LA riots and I am sure glad that I owned a couple handguns at the time. I never had cause to use them but I was sure glad I had them. It is better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. My Mother-In-Law called my wife and I the second night and asked that we come stay with her in Torrance. She specifically asked me to bring a gun.

There's nothing quite like a little break down in government services to make a gun + ammo worth their weight in gold.

If the N.G. comes in and martial law is declared, can they shoot looters on sight? Because I think that's the way to get looters to stop quickly (one way or the other ;) ).

I am really.. I used to be pretty against guns in general, but I've mentioned in a few other threads recently that I wouldn't mind getting one.

Both for protection and survival, ie: hunting. If everybody else is going to have them, I may as well too.

I've changed quite a bit in the last few years..
