Regarding ftp. I have @home service, and i set up an ftp server on my main system. I have no intentions to giving access to strangers but is there anyway someone can access it without my permission? I always thought it wasn't a good idea to give out ip addresses. Or should/can I change my ip address periodically?

There is always a chance that someone can hack into your ftp, so that's why you have to change the default ftp port from 21 to other port number.

Unless the person do a port scan than it won't help, but it always a good idea not to use default port.

I don't think you can change your ip periodically. Although in theory it's DHCP but you won't change your IP # much.

I haven't change my IP in 6 months

As long as you aren't using windows 2000 IIS(have to poke fun at IIS) as your ftp server and you get a good ftp server then you should be pretty secure.

Configure everything to only allow those users you want to have access (unless they have dynamic addresses). Use a software firewall and set the permissions in there as well. This should make sure you're pretty secure.
