I am firmilar with using my ftp program, and i share at my school, and when i am Home just fine. My question is...

Is it possible to share out side my network? I only know how to share with computers on the same network. Does anyone know what i mean?

So at home, i have a linksys router, and i am using Serv-U...but i want to share pictures and some save game files with my buddy. We are both on Road runner, but the files are to big for Email...

Is it possible... can someone walk me through it...

You can do port forwarding. I am guessing the firewall on the router is blocking requests for the ftp server (correct me if I'm wrong).
 
well...i wish i knew what port forwarding is...but i don't know how to see if i am blocking ftp request... I guess i lack the networking lingo...so things like dchp...and all that technical jargin confuses me...

after i log into the router...what should i be looking to change...and what is port forwarding...
 
One solution is to put your computer on the DMZ and install a software firewall. The other is to forward the ports that you are running your ftp server on (and/or any other server). For both those tasks you will want to assign a static IP to your computer on your LAN. But in my experience once a router knows your machine, it keeps assigning it the same ip till you run out of your IP pool.

Port forwarding is on page 65 of the above manual. It's listed as "Port Range Forwarding." I would recommend going through the entire manual, I did that the first time with each one of my routers.
 
Thanks for looking for me...i appreciate it... I will read the manual, but i am now just confused about which ports am i forwarding to... i mean ftp defaults at port 21 on my pc...what port am i forwarding from? thanks again...
 
Good question actually. To use ftp you will want to forward port 21 to your computers port 21. Now, here comes the tricky part, I have found that in some routers you also have to forward port 20 (that port is also used by ftp). Go through the manual and try it first by just forwarding 21, if that doesn't work then forward 20 and 21. If that still doesn't work then maybe someone with a linksys router can help you better. 🙂

Should i change this?
 
I would enable that. It just prevents anyone from knowing you're there, not sure if it will affect your port forwarding or not.
