Guys. I have a FS with Windows Server 2003 on it. I want to FTP out my files for people. What can I download to serve my files out on FTP? Also, is there some sort of program that will pick up when my IP changes(ISP'S tend to change alot)? Please give me your suggestions, thanks!

I'd suggest FileZilla server for your FTP server. Remember to forward the port from your router. If you have a dynamic IP, use a service such as dyndns to automatically update when your IP changes. That way colemonthd.dyndns.org (or insert a different name) would always point to your server's IP.

Since you have Windows Server 2003, why don't you use the FTP server bundled with IIS6?

How do I go about doing this?

If these are questions you're asking, you probably shouldn't be putting an FTP server on the net anyhow.

Jesus Christ, are you people always like this? This forum is intended to get help and give help. Comments like this are outrageous. Why can't someone either help or NOT post at all?

I'm trying to help the rest of us that have to deal with a lot of systems that have been rooted because of poorly setup FTP servers installed by shitbuckets that don't know what the ****** they're doing.

If you don't know what you're doing, how to learn how to do it, or aren't willing to do it right DON'T OFFER SERVICES TO THE NET. The rest of us have to deal with inadequate security postures out here in the real world.

So what? It's his computer and his ISP service. I hate this "holier-than-thou" attitude. How about you give him some pointer at basic tutorial for a change? Not everyone was born pre-crammed with information.

but it's not his internet...and when he gets his box hosed, and it starts spamming/DDOSing/brute forcing my boxes, then it IS my problem.

It's like handing a kid who has never ridden a motorcycle before the keys to a 'Busa and telling him to have fun....chances are VERY good you will be scraping him off the road somewhere.

That's a horrible excuse. With your logic, no one should ever put their box on the net. Everyone will be cowering behind their outlets. What you should do is HELP him be a better administrator. Instead of just brushing him off a just another "newbie", why don't you give him some pointers on basic security? You can always start off with simple things like configuring routers, setting up firewalls, and assigning permissions. Bitching about "another zombie again" isn't going to help anyone.

No, getting on the internet is different than offering services on the internet.

Everyone will be cowering behind their outlets. What you should do is HELP him be a better administrator.

We would, if he was ready to learn.

Why doesn't he come up with better questions? The questions he has presented shows a lack of initiative by not trying to get hte informaiton on his own. If he is not willing to work for the information, what makes you think he is actually going to learn something when spoon fed information?

HOW-TOs promote a lack of understanding that kills the mind. They are generally narrow and lack vital information about why things were done and other options available. Plus, they're a pain in the dick to keep up to date and useful.

You can always start off with simple things like configuring routers, setting up firewalls, and assigning permissions. Bitching about "another zombie again" isn't going to help anyone.

It makes me feel better, so I guess you're wrong. :)

So, where are your pointers? Your documentation? Your contribution to the series of tubes that makes up teh intarweb?

I'll tell you the same thing just about anywhere: learn the software before you deploy it to the world. :)

I'm not a "holy-one," I'm just someone that has to deal with the ill effects of millions of cracked machines put out on the net before they were properly configured. If you can't do a minimal amount of research, you shouldn't be providing services.

If you aren't willing to do a little research and play around a bit so you can ask better questions, you probably shouldn't be on a geek site.

NocMonkey, thanks for this link. I am sorry you feel the way you do, but you started somewhere one time. Thanks for your help!

Not sure where the 'argument' is going, but if you wanted to make it simple with a 1-2-3 step, you can use FileZilla. I have done that in the past and haven't had a problem. Make sure you have permission set correctly on your files, and make your passwords strong. I have woken up to a list of failed login attempts on more than one occasion.

A router serves sort of like a firewall, so you have protection there as well, but the more protection you can give, the better.

As to the computer getting hosed and used to attack others, those bitching on here should maybe consider using their own 'awesome' knowledge to keep up your own security. If your that 'great' at what you do, you shouldn't have any problem with the typical PC taken over and becoming a bot for whoever's use.

When you have 10Gbit of traffic coming at you, your own security is generally moot. ;)

Point taken.
