i want to set up an ftp server on my schools network. if i run a firewall with the school be able to look into my computer or be able to trace my activity. and next should i use the ftp service in win2k or just download a service. thanks

I assume you're talking college campus net?

If you run a server they will be able to track your usage but will probably only do so if they have a strict no-servers policy, or you are using lots of bandwidth. Many places will monitor for a bandwidth hog even w/out a server.

As for what server, if you do run IIS, make sure to get on top of the patches before you start it up for the first time, and more than just SP2. Also, to be extra safe, disable web/e-mail/etc servers until you need to use them.

The IIS FTP server is crap. If you do not want to have to worry about your box getting hacked five minutes, I would suggest you look at Serv-U FTP server.

However, if the whole thing is against school policy, then I don`t recommend anything except find another place outside of the school network for an FTP server.

As Fubar stated, they will most likely always monitor bandwidth, so you will probably get caught.
