FTP server question for College LAN

I want to set up an FTP server here on my college LAN. I usually get between 2500 and 3000 up when checking from www.dslreports.com so I have alot more to play with then a DSL or Cable. This brings me to my question what kind of specs would I need for a standalone FTP server? I checking the search function but everyone that asked always asked only had a small upload speed. Also are there any good places to learn more about running an FTP server? Thanks everyone.

just watch yourself because if you have alot of stuff being upped and downloaded every day they may kick you off the network alltogether. i have seen it happen many times. just dont get greedy.

hmm I never thought of that. That could be problematic. I am at ASU right now and I hate it here so much I most certainly dont want to get kicked off the web. Do the software programs allow you to limit the amount given and recieved?

You don't need a very powerful system for running an FTP. I was running one on my Celeron 850 with 256MB of ram.

Serv-U ftp can cap the download limit of each user so they won't be sucking up so much bandwidth. You can also limit the number of users.

I have a chance to get a 500 celeron for a decent price and was wondering if that would work. If that doesnt I could probably get a Duron machine for not much more since I have an extra 20gb hard drive lying around and that would be the most expensive component.

A Celeron 500 will be fine.

How much RAM would you suggest for it? I think the celeron might only have 64 so I would obviously be upgrading it but what would a good amount be?

I don't think you'll need a whole lot so 64 should be fine but I'd suggest 128. Since you're doing this off the college network, I assume you won't be allowing thousands of connections.

Definitely be careful about the upload limits if there are any at your school. I almost got kicked off here at ISU because they have a 200meg up limit for traffic off campus and I was sharing files and transferring about 30GB a day. They sent me a nasty email to either voluntarily cut back or they would put a speed limiter on my line to slow everything down.

Wow I didnt know the colleges kept such big tabs on everyone. I guess I just figured that there were too many people for the to. I know this dumb school has nearly 50,000 people. Granted not everyone uses the ethernet. I probably shouldnt even bother because the network is so terrible. I can only play CS on the weekends and sometimes not even then, because I cannot connect to servers any other time.

64MB is plenty but RAM is soo cheap these days you might as well upgrade to 128 or 256MB

I knew a guy back in the days of napster who ended up being kicked off his college network within 2 weeks of being there.

Well I havent been kicked off yet. I know a friend who downloaded like 5 Divx movies today so I will see what happens to him. I doubt that I have gone over 1gb of downloads in a day yet though.
