does anybody know how to set up an ftp server?
i have a linksys router and 5 port hub. ive tried to set up an ftp server and i think one of the problems is that the ftp server is trying to use the ip address that the router assigned to the port on the hub that iam pluged into. how do i find out what my ip address from my internet provider? (i am on Road Runner)also does anybody have any sugestions on a certain ftp program to use? i ve tried G6 server and Warftp v1.7. i think another problem is that i am having a dificult time properly configuring the programs.
Thanks

you need to forward the port that you are using for the ftp. In the routers setup someplace you should be able to tell it to forward the ftp port for the ip that the router assigned to that machine not sure how roadrunner works but you can try an app i found at tucows called MyWanip. It will detect and report what your public ip that roadrunner assigns to the router is. that is the ip that clients would connect to not the ip assigned to your ftp machine by the router. The ftp server should use the internal ip assigned by the router. The router will do the rest and make sure everything goes where it should but you need to forward the port that the ftp is using or the router won't allow incoming connections. That is part of the NAT function and hardwall firewall features.

well i tried going thru my router and i set up forwarding. i discovered my wanip was XX.XX.XX.XX . i set port 21 to forward to the ip address that my router assigns to my hub port that the machine is plugged into. i then re installed warftp and then got on another computer and tried to log on to the ftp site but it wouldnt allow it. i think that the other half of the problem is that warftp isnt configured right and as far as configuring it properly for users ,after it has been installed , iam having a hard time understanding what i have to do. is there a more user friendly (fre) ftp server program that i can use (i hope this isnt the easiest one to use). iam very new at this . thanks for all your help
