FTP question: What exactly is this NOOP command?

I'm a bit of a newbie in the world of hosting ftps, but I've noticed users idling on my server, but every time they reach 90 seconds idle, they seem to 'automatically' execute the N00P command, thereby saving themselves from being timed-out.

What is this, should I disable it? Thanks

I always thought it meant no op(eration). A lot of client programs do have it built in. How is it exploiting your ftp?

well..thing is my upload is capped at 30K/S which isn't too much, so therefore I set only 3 or 4 open slots. And the server usually tends to be full. So it's not particularly fair that people are downloading a couple of things then idling for 7 or 8 hours while they sleep..taking up a spare slot..

Yeah, that is rather annoying people taking up spare slots when they are not downloading. I usually just queue up and set to disconnect after download is done. You should definitely disable. Some FTP servers allow you to kick idle users off even if they send the NOOP command.
