Great addition...

However I can't play this anymore. I played this wayyy to much and got sick of it to death by playing vanilla + HUGE community mod that brought more content than this official Advanced Edition.

As I have only played the stock vanilla game, mind telling us what mod this is?

I've been looking forward to this! I too played it to death though. I might hold off for a little while as well.

It's that captain's edition mod that combines top 5 mods that all complement each other (google it)- that dumbass link is currently down now due to FTL's AE release today.

It has...

-83478347 new weapons that are rather VERY WELL balanced... scatter bomb, piercing laser (non-rocket), 5-volley, etc....

This introduces new FUN ways to destroy enemy ship:

-Fire Beam deals no hull damage, but MASSIVE multi room fire... crews all choke to death and get overwhelmed. You win while enemy ship has full HP & shields. Original game only has a meager 1 room fire bomb.

You know how in original game, you'd prioritize downing shield and weapon? With fire beam, you can just go invis with cloak while torching their crews.

-They also have Bio beam which does MASSIVE crew damage, minimal all else.

-Awesome new drones.. with the right drones, you can go afk and 3 drones go ape shit on your enemy ship and win.

-Equally massive additions to different enemy ships AND enemy drones AND enemy medbay/fueling stations that attack.

-New dialogue and choices, etc etc.

The official FTL update is great with studio grade polish in GUI and animations, but in terms of sheer gameplay and mechanics, this crowd effort of Captain's Edition wins.

FTL was fun until you figure out that it is fully random. It does not matter what options I choose at an event the RNG decides if it is good or bad.

I enjoy roguelikes, but I at least want to feel that when I die in one it is because I made a mistake and not because the RNG decided to make every event bad.

Umm, the options are weighted. For the strange encounters there's usually a risky option with rewards and a leave alone option to just skip it and then a series of options with better safe rewards if you've gotten the right equipment or crew.

I think the options are heavily weighted towards one style of play (vs another). For example, I've never beaten the game....but I also never had an interest in using boarding parties. All the advice I've seen here on AT seems to be related to utilizing boarding parties.

Maybe I missed something, but I think you should be able to win this game by blowing sh*t up over and over and over.....not boarding them and eliminating the crew.

On a different note, I do think it's cool that this DLC is free. Not a lot of developers give away stuff for free.

I think I've beat the vanilla game a few dozen times, at least once with each ship using probably every type of strategy. It's hard, yes, you have to make sure you play your cards right.

Boarding parties are just the easiest way to accumulate more scrap. So I guess you can consider it weighted towards that style of play. You get more for killing the crew and leaving the ship in tact. You can always use fire/bio beams and and/or oxygen destroying strategies.

The biggest thing that pisses me off is the store placement and items available. There were a few times where I made it to the 5th area or so with still the original crew. Oh well, that is what happens sometimes when it is random.

That doesn't happen as much in AE, most stores have a second tab of inventory so there are more options in general. Also, especially in the last five sectors, you can hire or rescue crew that are already trained in one or two skills.

I'm liking the AE, just waiting for the save editor's update to make it compatible with the new content. I like using it to give myself more starting scenarios. Right now the creator is working on it, and his forum topic is so popular the entire website is getting hammered.

This game is friggen annoying to play on an iPad. I enjoy the difficulty on my PC but not so on the tablet. Easy mode should be easier. Also waiting for an endless play option, not a fan of the short play time.

There's a mod for that though it takes away the urgency

I wonder if it would work on the iPad version? I know some games like Baldur's Gate use the same files so you could mod it via PC and then move to iPad. Guess it's research time.
