FSX pegged at 16FPS, GPU stuck at 70%

FSX is stuck at about 16fps for me, and a look at CCC tells me that the GPUs isn't going over 70% utilization much, if at all. I've heard that this game is very bus intense, so is PCIE v1 limiting me here?

specs: C2D conroe @ 3.2Ghz

P35

3870

Anyone else have a similar setup that they can use to confirm this for me?

Version 1 of PCI-e is not limiting a 38xx card in any way. not sure what is ging on with it.

Is your PCIE running at 16x? If so, then maybe your FSX settings are too high. If PCIE isn't running at 16x, then that could be the issue.

FSX is cpu limited, which explains the GPU usage not going to 100%.

As for your 16 fps problem, FSX performs poorly on pretty much every hardware configuration. Is it stuck at 16 fps everywhere or just in certain spots? If you're flying over a city single digit framerates are common.

you could probably benefit from a CPU upgrade. does FSX support quads? if not get an e8500 and OC it to 4.6GHz or so (high oc but seems pretty common), if it supports quads totally bomb a Q9550 at 3.6. that would be an epicly awesome upgrade

Alright I did a mini test for you, I was convinced it was the CPU. So I ran the "Sitka Approach" mission with two setting on rig in sig.

Graphic Settings:
Graphics: Custom (All options maxed at 1680x1050)
Aircarft, Scenery, Weather, Traffic: Ultra High Preset

Setting One: Q9550 @ 6 x 450 = 2.7 Ghz

Loading: CPU usage pretty high during loading all 4 cores used generously hitting a peak of 98% CPU usage.
Gameplay: Pretty high cpu usage hitting a max of 100%. FPS hits low to mid 20's close to the runway and during landing and is around 50-60 in the air

Setting Two: Q9550 @ 8.5 x 450 = 3.825 Ghz.

Loading: CPU usage pretty high during loading all 4 cores used generously hitting a peak of 98% CPU usage. But noticeably shorter loading time.
Gameplay: Pretty high cpu usage hitting a max of 100%. FPS hits low 30's close to the runway and during landing and is around 60-70 in the air

Now this is of course with a quad, FSX eats quads, it needs a lot of CPU power over anything else.

FSX is bus intensive but with a 3870 you are not being bottlenecked: http://www.tomshardware.com/re...i-express,1761-11.html

Your problem is the processor, you need a good quad to run FSX well. I think if you want to dominate FSX you pretty much need a Q9xxx or, better yet, an i7; in addition, a faster video card.

So if you want to go crazy about FSX.... you need to replace CPU + graphics. If you're not crazy about FSX..... pretty much everything else will run fine on the system you have right now.

Ok, thanks guys. Guess this is one of the only games that gets bottlenecked by the 6750.

On a related note, last night I saw a phenom with 8Gb of RAM and a 3200 run FSX just fine on all high settings at best buy. Go figure...

Ok, I'm checking the situation out again, and the proc isn't even pegged. It's hovering around 70% max, and sometimes it looks like it's only consistently utilizing one core at about 50%.

Also, turning off filtering and AA bumps the FPS up to 28. What gives?

Do you have the game updated? FSX didn't use more than one core until the SP1 update IIRC
