Somebody @ headquarters decided to dick around with the DNS server this weekend, and managed to drop my machines. The project I'm working on relies on several hundred emails received from NASA 24/7 ... email which I haven't received since yesterday morning :(

Of course, when we wanted to take them out of the loop and get direct network connectivity for this project instead of going through corporate back in LA they screamed bloody murder. Yet now they pull this crap.

Just venting, have a nice day.

You work for Dolby, don't you.

No, I've got better sense then that.
Somebody might fall from a tall building, but I'll just be watching from the top :p

Don't mess with us. I can take your whole project down in flames and make it look like an accident. Tread carefully. IT holds the real power in any organization.

I've had to use my frickin Yahoo account to email our partners and customers before. It sucks. I clearly explain to them DO NOT EMAIL ME BACK, this is NOT my work email account. What do I get back? Emails....

Ahhh, I love the corporate world. Beats the hell out of high school, football games, bonfires, crazy parties, breakin curfew and chasin tail doesnt it? MUCH rather be stuck in the office for 8 hours a day starin at a monitor workin on a spreadsheet or upgrade.......

Actually no. I'm Operational Staff. If it is user error or the person is a jerk it takes me a LONG time to help them. I'm very nice at fixing any problem that occurs, but I can't stand users who lie, or people who think their problem is important when it really isn't. I will fix problems as they occur, but do have to prioritize things. I'm sorry for your trouble, but realize you aren't the only one that has problems.

Bah ... the customer isn't paying us to keep our network up. They are paying us for what the engineers & scientists produce. The only network facilitates that. If the productive parts of the company can't deliver, it's downhill for everybody.

Sometimes I think we'd be better off with standalone machines and a flock of carrier pigeons with USB Flash drives strapped to their legs. Of course, then the guys that feed the pigeons would have the control :disgust:

Yea, I guess I'm coming across as a prick at the moment, but the fact is that they broke it, and it IS important. Early on they told us they didn't want their network relied on for mission critical stuff. So we tried to get our own network connection that we controlled that we could rely on. Which went over like a lead balloon. They don't want to be responsible for it, but they do want to control it. Sorry, you can't have it both ways.

edit: and I'm venting here @ atot because I can't vent at these guys here.

Wait for security to call and tell you to turn of telnet and ftp....

And then wait for them to tell you you can't install SSH..

Go ahead, block my ports. I don't care... Really, I don't.

Yea, we've gone a few rounds on that stuff already also. But I killed telnet myself.
They aren't to keen on me running a firewall on my workstation either, but can't seem to explain why.

I feel your pain. I was talking to my boss about this at lunch, and he said "You're the best person I know at getting around obstacles"... which is probably why the IT people are always pissed at me.

Corporate IT is pretty bad.
Government IT is worse.

Our current IS (IT, different name) director doesn't seem to embrace technology so much as fear it. WiFi is a four-letter word around here, as is anything non-Microsoft. Sure, the internet access works, but the stuff that the content filter blocks is asinine.

Your situation isn't a picnic though. :p

Fixed!

Users suck. They are not IT qualified, heck most the *IN* IT people aren't...
