Grrrr

just got off the phone with Seagate...

My computer no longer boots, varies errors from Windows cannot find system32/system, operating system load failed, and disk read error..

Called Seagate tech support, they said they had a 5 year warranty, and that I should just do their ship-ahead program, where they send you a new drive and a box to mail your dead one in. I leave bright-eyed and transfer to their warranty division.

Complete B!tch. Says while I bought my card June 2004, when their 5 year warranty program began, it was actually shipped out if seagate in may... WHAT THE FSCK!

grrrrr

I am a college student. I can barely afford FOOD. and now I need a new video card as mine freezes any time I touch a game, and is conveniently JUST out of warranty. (ended Sept 15th) and a new hard drive.. What the hell did I do to deserve this... :(

You just lost a video card and a hard drive? What kind of power supply are you using? Please don't say the one that came with the case.

That's why I've made a point of keeping all of my receipts in the last couple of months. That way if someone gives me crap, I can fax them a copy showing when I bought it. The warranty is supposed to start FROM THE TIME YOU BOUGHT IT. Try calling back and getting another CSR, you might get somone more flexible.

Are you people that stupid?

He's saying that Seagate should honor their 5 year warranty from the date you purchase the drive, not when they ship it to the seller. How the fvck are people supposed to know the actual shipping date on these drives unless they print it in bold right on the box.

not sure why you had to toss in the Ferrari laptop comment. If it makes you feel any better, my friend has a Ferrari. You're school have a library? a computer lab? use those so you can "survive". If you didn't save your receipt all Seagate has to go by is the manufacture date for warranty. Don't blame them becuase you don't have proof.

Are you that stupid? How is Seagate supposed to know when he bought it if he doesn't have proof? Every HD has a serial #. and Seagate allows you to check the status of that warranty; http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp

From Seagate.com:

4. Does the five-year warranty apply to internal Retail Kit purchased after the new warranty date, even if the printed box indicates only a 3-year warranty?
Yes, if purchased after July 26, 2004 the internal products will have the five-year warranty. Packaging reflecting the new warranty will soon be on Retail shelves. If Retail customers have questions about the warranty on their internal Retail products, the can access their warranty information at www.seagate.com.

So why exactly are you expecting a 5-year warranty?

Legally they have to honor the warranty based on the PURCHASE date provided you can prove when you bought it. As long as the box said 5 year warranty on it, then that's what you get as long sa you still have your receipt and the box or whatever. But if you don't, then you can't prove when you bought it so they go off the manufacture date.

If the rep doesn't understand that, get a supervisor. This happens all the time.

Yeap, exactly. But he doesn't seem to have proof he's purchased it < 5yrs ago. So OBVIOUSLY its Seagate and their sh!tty policies!

Kindly point out where the OP stated that he does NOT have the receipt. Regardless of his receipt situation, companies should start their warranty periods on the date that the consume purchases the item, not when they ship out the item to a reseller.

First off, they should be able to extrapolate that if it shipped late may, I probably didnt buy it untill June 1st.. :p

In theory I could check best-buy's sale history to see when it was on sale, as I know I bought it for $50 (120gb), but the receipt burned to a crisp in a car fire that took my Sable. :(

Sadly, $70 worth of rebates burned with it, and insurance didnt give me any money for stuff inside the car, which was that and my college textbooks, but thats unrelated. Ive always been unlucky :p

So basically im sh1t out

Oh, and I have a Enermax 435 Power supply.. so I hope thats not whats frying my stuff..

You had a Sable? And it burned? :( I have a Sable, too, what year did you have?

And besides, I don't get what the problem is here. Even drives purchased before the 5-year date had a 3-year warranty, not one year. So what's the issue?

If you paid with a credit card, lots of stores can print you copies of your receipts these days. I'm pretty sure Best Buy can do that...

Yep BestBuy can. My receipt for my speakers faded away (Thanks thermal paper receipts!) and I called the Best buy corporate office. 2-3 weeks later, I had a clear copy of my original receipt. This was about 3 years after the original purchase.

1994 Sable, catalytic converter overheated, some leaves blew under the car and ignited on contact. Big spark.

whole car was on fire by the time I came out of the house to notice, inside and out.

and apparently I just talked to them, the warranty ran out may 18th, meaning it had a may 18th ship date. The lady was very nice, but said her computer would not physically allow her to do a RMA, as its officially out of warranty.

I paid for Best Buy with cash, as my debit card was empty then

No, it didnt have a 3 year warranty, it had a one year warranty.
Where does it say Seagate had a 3 year for Internal IDE drives?

That sucks. Screw these losers who can't seem to comprehend the problem with their feeble little minds :)
