FSB vs DRAM Speed Help

Is it possible to increase the FSB, and not the memory bus speed. So that the clock speed is higher, but leaving the memory speed lower? My Samsung 2100 512mb cas2.5 is holding me back. I run a 1700+ XP at 2100+ - 2200+, but i can't get the fsb above 145 without it crashing. Thanks.

That is pretty much dependent on the motherboard and BIOS. I doubt that you can with that mobo, which is a bit long in the tooth now. If you really want to tap the overclocking potential of an XP 1700+, you should consider upgrading to one of the nForce2 motherboards. But that might also require upgrading the RAM. Frankly, you are doing pretty good with what you've got. But if you want to spend the $$$, there's more to be had with that chip.

My motherboard lets me turn the DRAM Timmings for the ram down by 33mhz so it'll be HCLK-33... I think that's wut it means. 🙂 Would it be faster, if I turned my CPU up to ie: 166fsb or should i leave the ram at 133? Thanks.

I got my FSB up to 151 max by hardware on my MSI K7T266 Pro2-A, then by software from MSI I got it up to 160(NOT STABLE)... So i'm just gonna leave it at 151. My memory speed is now only 113, but in CL2 instead of my old setting where the FSB = Memory Speed.

Which is better?

12.5 * 151 = 1887.5Mhz (~2300+)
w/ Memory Speed at 113Mhz CL2 = Ram Int Bandwidth 1596MB/s, Ram Float Band width of 1521MB/s

OR

12.5 * 140 = 1750Mhz (~2100+)
w/ Memory Speed at 140Mhz CL3 = Ram Int Bandwidth ~2000MB/s, ~1800MB/s

2nd one imo

the loss of ram bandwidht doesnt really help out having the higher fsb for hte athlon

its better to have a 1:1 ratio tahn have cpu higher than ram
