system spec:
2100+ xp on a7n8x [rev 2]
stock HSF with AS3
1gig (2x512) twinmos w/winbond pc3200 ram
maxtor DM9+ 120gb hdd
sapphire radeon 9500pro
enermax 3501 case with 350w psu

i plan to run the above rig at stock speeds to begin with [i didnt get a good HSF at this stage just to curb any tendencies to tweak until i had my knowledge about o/c upto speed:)]
my question is simply how safe would it be for me to bump up the fsb from 133 to 166 without changing vcore and without getting a better hsf?
when i do get o/cing in earnest: at what fsb/multi should i consider flicking up the vcore?

finally, should i run the ram at default speed or downclock it for tighter timings and run it in synch at 133mhz?

all advice appreciated :D

I'd start with a 166 Mhz bus, then change the multiplier to get it as close to stock specs as you can. If that's stable... then change the multiplier to 12, and that will give you 2.0 Ghz... that's the point where you maybe have to start increasing voltage. If you're not happy with 2 Ghz, or you just wanna go faster, then start doing a little at a time, increasing the voltage as necessary to gain stability. I don't like to go over 1.750 volts even if the temps are low enough. It's not always heat that kills a processor... it's voltage (electrical pressure) beating on the processor harder the higher you go.

Run ram in sync, and at Cas 2-2-2-5.
Bump to 166MHz no problem. Stock voltage may do it, if not you can lower multiplier or raise voltage.
Up vcore when you bump the fsb and it doesn't work.
Testing with Prime95 helps you make sure the overclock is stable.
When you get a better heatsink (slk-800?) you can shoot for 200 fsb x 11 multi or more.

I'm not sure I'd be so ready to jump straight to 166 with the stock HSF. In fact, I would go so far as to say I wouldn't overclock at all until you get a quality aftermarket one.

Hey Guys,
I pretty much have the same thing.
The Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Amd XP2100+
SLK-800U and a YS-Tech Adjustable fan
Kingston Hyper X PC3000 512 MB chip

I went ahead and bumped my FSB straight to 166 from 133 with a stock 1.6 vcore and 13 multiplier. Ran like a charm booting at XP2700+ speed, but after long in prime it eventually failed a test. where should I go from here?
I want a decent overclock but not by too much.
Should I shoot for 200FSB?
Let me know

perhaps you should try some combination of rasing the FSB and increasing the CPU clock multiplier, if moving towards 200 FBS gives you problems. My Barton 2500+ will not run at 166/333 on my AN19E m/b, but I was able to lower the FSB to 133/266, and then change the multiplier from the stock 11x to 15x, so it is running at 2004Mhz, and posts as a 2600+.

has anyone run this setup on 166mhz fsb with the stock hsf?
i knew i should have put the slk800 in straight away - i'm far too excited with the idea od O/C to run the system in properly :D
