I was wondering what people think is a hotter deal:

Athlon XP 2100 and ECS K7S5A Pro: $109.99
or
P4 2.4/533 and ECS P4VXASD2+: $169.99

P4 2.4/533 is OEM is $161 at Newegg, so you are only looking at $9 for the ECS P4VXASD2+ board. That being sad the board has no USB 2.0, only 4 PCI slots, only does DDR266(big performance hit with P4's).

Athlon XP 2100 is $97 at Newegg, so motherboard costs $23 at Fry's, If you get a working one(not a guarantee with ECS K7S5A boards), its a good board with 4 USB 2.0 ports, its also limited to DDR266, but that is not as big a deal with Athlon chips.

Either way its a good deal. I haven't decided either, but if I went the P4 route I would probably end up reselling the board and getting something else with USB 2.0, DDR333+ support, more PCI slots, etc. Same with the AMD deal, keep the board for a while until a good NForce 2 deal comes around.

Last time this combo deal (2100+ and K7S5A) came up, I called and the Austin Fry's told me the chips were T'bred B's (AIUHB's ) if that sweetns the deal any.

If I call them, how do I ask if it's a TBred? Is there a special model number or something?

Also, anyway I could get them to ship it to NYC since we dun have a Fry's here.

How does the ECS K7S5A Pro compare to the vanilla K7S5A that 9 out of 10 people hate with a passion? (And the 10th person swears he's built 100 stables systems with.)

I don't think that Fry's ships, but I may be wrong. You can check outpost.com, but I did not see the deal there. I MIGHT be going to get this combo tonight. If it turns out you can not get Fry's to ship, or find it on outpost, PM me and maybe we can work something out. I could get it for you for cost + shipping, if I am going that is. I stay away from Fry's unless there is something I know I want.

The ECS P4VXASD2+ that's in the P4 2.4 combo does support USB 2.0, but you sure have to move lots of jumpers for DDR.
The ECS k7s5a pro is a good board just as the regular K7s5a, The reason why you see lots of people having problems is becuase there ton and ton of people owning them, with more people come more problems. Most of those problem can be fix by a better power supply. The 9 out of 10 people hate or can't get it to work is just wrong. I say it more like 3 out of 10 max.

Fry had the ECS k7s5a pro + xp2100 for $99 couple of weeks back and they were Tbred B cpus, so mostly like they will be the same.

Thanks, but actually, I think the XP2100 and Pro motherboard for $20 more is a much better deal than the XP2000 and non-Pro board, right?
