man, I was just in Vegas, but never made it down that part of the Strip...I'm assuming it's down by the Outlets center. I didn't even make it to CES or the Adult Video convention. :p

The store has already opened... It soft opened on the 8th, last Wed... The expected Grand Opening is on Jan. 17th... The theme is. of course of Vegas.... The entrance has a huge slot machine that you walk under. The slot machine does work, and can be programed for a variety of things. The inside is like the store in Sunnyvale if you've ever been there.... Expect there to be HUGE sales on the 1st day.... Expect them to be on par with the ad that was on Black Friday...

Sunnyvale's was freaking confusing to go around in.. built like a computer chip so just long lines crossing each other is all i remember. Fountain Valley's is nice though :) and Black Friday... they had to basically shut down the whole store... riots almost broke out because everybody was scrambling to get the free items.

Don't worry... There will be police on hand this time for crowd control... :)

It's probably not what you had in mind, but the façade at the entrance is a giant slot machine, with three video displays as the reels. The barricades in front of the doors are stacks of quarters. Inside, they've put up pictures of different things that have happened in Las Vegas over the years. Instead of Muzak, there's a player piano in the middle of the store (playing mainly standards and oldies...Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" on a piano is different).

The giant sucking sound you hear is Vegas geeks' wallets getting emptied. :D

On another board, someone who works at Fry's posted a list of all the new locations opening (for those who want to know if a Fry's is opening near them. Lemme see if I can dig up that list.

Ah, here it is:

Concord, CA
Las Vegas
San Marcos
Alpharetta, GA (Atlanta)
Gwynette, GA (Atlanta Area)
Chicago
Denver
Seattle
2nd Portland
South houston
Plano
Sugarland

I forgot the other 3 locations, but they were in Texas. Las Vegas and San Marcos are on sched for this year. Also coming soon, Fry's Credit (APR comparable to other store credit cards). Employees have had for the last month now, shouldnt be too much longer for customers. They're waiting to test out the statement mailings.

So I hope that info was useful to some on if there's a Fry's coming to you soon or not. At least the East Coast will finally have some.

they moved out of that building about 4-5 years ago(?). now it has a roman theme or whatever you call it. lots and lots of marble and a grand piano in the middle that provides some music.

Talked to one of the Fry's - Las Vegas employees last night, and they said their opening was going to be huge, much bigger than the Industry opening, just because people in Las Vegas have never seen a Fry's. I walked around looking at all the gawkers. People would just walk slowly looking around, wondering where the hell they were. I went to school in LA, so I've been to all the SoCal Fry's. Anyway, there's going to be a 4 page spread (per standard Fry's ads) in the LV Review Journal to cover the sale items. They'll also be giving away a Hummer H2, TV's, etc. I've got a test at 8, but hopefully I'll be able to make opening.

The ad won't appear til Friday...

Yep, can vouch for that. They have a full page advertisement in the Thursday Review Journal, but it just says their grand opening is tomorrow (doors open at 9:00) and no other specifics other than "Grand Opening Sales".

I was in PC Club about a year and a half ago and one of the employees told me that there was going to be a Fry's in Vegas but I did not believe him, I was sure wrong on that one, I think that this will kill PC Club and good riddance what a gyp joint it turned out to be. I like CSO over in henderson, they have some good freebies,

Yeah, they bought the property, but refuse to set a date for a store opening.

When IS hell freezing over, btw?

It sure seems to be happening slowly, but look slike it's still in the works. From Renton City Council minutes from 3 months ago:

Fry's Electronics has requested a
waiver of mitigation and utility connection fees totaling $295,171.07 in
association with the construction of its 150,000 square foot store in North
Renton. As estimates show, Fry's is expected to generate $2.6 million in City
tax and fee revenues in its first five years of operation. The Committee met on
October 14, 2002, and determined that the economic benefits of Fry's
Electronics to the City of Renton will far outweigh the initial loss of these fees.

I got there around 10 this morning...the checkout line went down the middle of the store three times, and the rest of the store was wall-to-wall people. I still managed to get in and out in about an hour, picking up the following goodies (the first two are for work, which is why I went there on their nickel :D ):

15" LCD monitor with built-in speakers...$190 after rebate
SMC wireless (802.11b) router/firewall...$40 after rebate
802.11b CardBus NIC...$10 after rebate
Seagate 80GB 7200rpm IDE HD...$50 after rebate
battery charger and 4 1900-mAh NiMH AAs...free after rebate

For some reason, the monitor and router rebates didn't print at the register. I only found out about that after getting back to work, so I stopped in again after work. The crowds had largely gone away...the store was still busy, but not at all like it was earlier. I picked up a few more goodies, this time for my parents in Phoenix:

17" monitor...$60 after rebate (to replace their 14" Packard Bell)
3-piece speaker set...$8, no rebate needed (since the PB monitor also has speakers)

Going through the checkout a second time, I also saw that Fry's carries Penguin caffeinated mints...think of them as Altoids with a kick. Guess I won't have to send away for them now.

Last I heard, there will be a Fry's opening in the suburbs West of Chicago sometime within the next year or so..I had read it in the local forums on dslreports.com.

We shall see.

I was very impressed with the staff at Fry's. I got there around 7:30PM that night (of their Grand Opening) after a half an hour in my truck just getting to their parking lot off of Las Vegas Blvd.

They had plenty of staff to direct traffic and ask for help. I went to their electronic section and asked for the ECS/AMD combo, memory, and free case. They said to just wait here in line and I thought oh boy. But after five minutes a sales associate personnaly escorted me to the motherboard stash, escorted me to the register to get the paperwork for the CPU and memory (had to wait a little for my name to be called), and while I was waiting for that she took my cart and got the case for me.

That store is awesome. A lot of items were on display so you could see them (cases, etc...), lots of parking, lots of check out registers, couldn't ask for a better experience. Sure it was crowded and you had to wait, but what do you expect for a grand opening like this with those prices.

Their ad came out today (Friday) and they have:

Kingston 256 MB PC 2100 DDR (266MHZ) for $24.99 (after rebate)
2GHZ Intel Celeron Processor and ECS P4VXASD2+ motherboard combination for $89.99 (no rebates needed).

Prices good thru Tuesday.

Now I went all the way to Vegas just to check out the new Fry's and I must say it was huge! In a few years, it'll be like the one in Anaheim...But for now, what a store!

It's smaller than the one in anaheim? Dang then its not THAT big. The one in industry dwarfs the anaheim one.

Fry's is definitely coming to Renton. In fact, the building is already up--I've seen it, and it's ENORMOUS! I can't imagine how much computer stuff they can fit in there.

I must say, I feel pretty lucky, as it's only about 1.5 miles from my house! :D
