I got a thorton core from fountain valley frys. AQZFA 0340 stepping, just like some bartons. Great deal I think if you can score a thorton.

When the salesman printed the order form out, it stated thorton on mine at fountain valley, so you can see before you pay if you are set to get one. Mine said "AXDC2400DKV3C FSB 266, AMD Thornton bare CPU"

its supposed to be a barton core with half the cache disabled, link where someone enabled it:
Info on enabling all the cache

^^
-edit-
that picture is for an XP2000 and my XP2400 looks different. So I don't think it may be the same connectors. My L2 bridges aren't cut the same as this one. But in any case, its a barton core, new recent stepping.

ad good for monday-tuesday, nov 3rd-4th. From LA times so should be good for all So Cal frys

Item number is 3859817

the ad is from the LA times. price should be good at all So Cal frys. Not sure if you'd get a thorton from all frys locations, it probably varies. I got a t-bred-A, old stepping from last year with the 2200+ combo from this weekend from fountain valley.
Item number is 3859817

even if you cant enable the cache, i love how this is a very very recent stepping, could be a great overclocker.

Can I do this trick with the pencil like it used to be with the multiplier?

How can you be sure that the extra 256k L2 cache is not bad on the chip to begin with, hence AMD is selling it as the TBred? Is there a way to test it before the mod? How do you mod it? Is there an easy way to do the mod like a pencil trick?
Thanks.

WTF is a Thorton core? Is it newer than Tbred B and Barton?

edit: never mind, just read the link; have you tried enabling the cache? Does it work?

Anyone in the Los Angeles area with a v.5 board (3DIMM) wanna trade for a v.8 board (2DIMM) Brand new just purchased today. Need one with 3 Dimm slots since I have lots of 256MB stick of ram here. Fry's does not bundle the v.5 version of the board anymore. Please Email me at BuonaDomenica90210@yahoo.com

thank you

i can't get the link directly. not much work to goto latimes.com, classifieds, newspaper ads, technology and looking it up yourself.

a thorton is a barton core but with half the cache marked off so its 256 like a t-bred. I am waiting for ram/heatsink, no chance for me to try it yet. your mileage will vary, im sure some may work w/ the 512 cache, some wont. I really don't know that much about the specifics.

So what's the difference b/w V.8 and V.5, other than the number of memory slots?

I can't wait until there's another hot deal on some Kingston DDR, then I can jump on one of these.

just got mine setup! didn't do the enabling of the 512 yet... my L2's look unfamiliar to me compared to that pic, I'll do it when a different site has a pic of what it should look like, if you go to the woodland hills store, make sure u double check with the manager of the computer stuff area, the regular guy tried to tell me they didnt have that combo

A newb question from a senior member. Of course you can buy it. Call (408) 617-1300 and they'll mail it to you. Whether you get a Thorton or not is YMMV. That's the beauty of buying it B&M. They bring you a CPU. You look at it. Go nah, I want another. Then they bring you another.

about getting a thorton or not, my actual order print out says "thornton" right on it as I was taking it from the computers dept to the front register. So i knew i was getting one for sure.

and have the sales associate just enter the item number in if you are having a hard time.

as for the picture, mine looks just like the one in the link. the picture in the link has a sticker over the top L bridges, i dont. The line he draws is on the row with the L2 bridges. What do I use by the way to connect these? I'm an AMD n00b, this is my first athlon.

if the bridge is cut w/ a gap between, you need to insulate first, then bridge. I use superglue w/ a scotch tape mask to insulte the divot, followed by an application of conductive material (defrost repair kit, conductive ink, etc). to bridge the contacts. it's detailed work. you can find detailed how-tos all over the place. try toms or google it. peace
EDIT: caveat: I am not familiar w/ anything particular to thorton's or unlocking them, this is just general info re how to go about bridging gaps based on the old t-breds. Don't rely on this post - do your own research.

differences between v5 and v8:

v5 = larger pcb, 3 dimms, kt333ce
v8 = smaller pcb, 2 dimms, kt333cf

they also say that v8 has "o/cing options" ???

BuonaDomenica, i would trade w/ you, but i'd have to drive 30 miles to LA (im in OC) :(

frys oc (search "frys")

hmm... bad thing is, the 4th bridge from the right, (one left of the line they made) on my CPU is has a indented cut in it. This picture doesnt. my entire row of L9 bridges are cut as well (they are the ones above the L2 row). I can't see if the ones in the picture are or not though.
