Has anyone bought this combo in Austin TX? I spoke with the sales rep there and he says all they have is Thoroughbred, no thorton. I find it had to believe that this store does not have thortons, while so many others do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Who has received a Thorton 2000+ and doesn't live in the Bay Area? Down here in LA/OC they always have the old stuff for the longest time: TBred-As, TBred-Bs when others are getting Thortons and rarely any cheap Barton deals ($109).

I got a XP2000+ Thornton from the Burbank Fry's today. Also last week I got Thornton's XP2200+ from the Manhatten Beach store. Don't know about Orange County Fry's what they give out.

Were you able to run these at 166FSB and/or enable the full 512KB cache?

Thanks.

Thorton is a Barton core with half of the L2 cache disabled. Many folks have been able to enable the full 512KB cache.

I do not have one of these CPUs, but I thinking of getting this combo. Would appreciate feedback from anyone who was purchased one. Even w/o enabling the 512KB cache, you can get a XP2600+ by running at 166MHz FSB (assuming it will overclock to that speed).

I bought this combo earlier tonight at the Fry's in the City of Industry, CA. It is a Thorton chip and a rev. 8 board.

I'm running right now as we speak and it seems to be stable at 175MHZ FSB.

The back of the motherboard box states that it should have overclocking features (like voltage adjustments), but I don't see it anywhere. The only thing I could change was the FSB. I'm suprised that it is running without changing any voltages. I'm using a generic heatsink with some old 7000 RPM delta fan that I had lying around. I have a 512 stick of Crucial DDR 333 in it running at 350. I've been running Super PI, 3dMark2003, and I've been running games all night. Not one lockup yet. I even did an XP repair install because I was too lazy to re-install all of my apps. This is SOLID!

I haven't tried the "barton upgrade" yet. I need to get some conductive ink tomorrow.

Does anyone know if this board is really supposed to allow you to adjust voltages? I don't see it anywere. The PCB is clearly marked "8.0" and the box says it SHOULD have the features.

In any case - not bad for 65 bones.

One more thought - the onboard sound didn't work and the board was used. I had to use an old Philips Acoustic Edge I had lying around. I'm too lazy to return or RMA it since it works fine otherwise. None of the boards at the Fry's in the City of Industry were new. I looked through the whole stack.

You don't need expensive conductive ink. Just use a pencil. It worked fine for me.

Fry's always has new boards. Just ask. NEVER EVER take a "Quality Checked" board from Fry's. Once I got a bad board. I took it back to Fry's and told them it was bad. The guy didn't even bother looking inside. He just took one of those "Quality Checked" stickers and stuck it on the box. Back to the shelf it goes. At least they knock a couple of bucks off the price now.

I ended up going to the Austin Fry's and got the thorton. I also called the Houston Fry's and the Dallas Fry's and they both have throtons. If you give them the PLU, they will read off the description which says 'DUT3C 2000 FSB 266 AMD THORTON' or some such.

The jerk at the austin store insisted they did not sell thortons, and even lied to me over the phone when I asked him to read the description. But I talked to the manager and he told me it was a thorton.

This deal is good till Tuesday the 25th.

Yeah, you can always ask for a new board if you don't see it. I never have to take a returned board unless it's discontinued/on clearance.

(EDIT) There are a ton of new boards at the Woodland Hills store. I also saw that AXP 1800+ TBred retail boxed processors are on clearance now for $59.90. :gift:

Is it possible that newer thorntons cannot be modded to be a barton?

I've tried conductive ink and just a regular pencil and it doesn't seem to activate. I check the status through CPU-Z and Sandra and both report 256k no matter what I try. I'm sure I filled the gap.

Do you guys think I'm doing something wrong or does the possibility exist that some Thorntons can't be modded?

=(

I don't remember the one I called and their web site is not coming up now. But the PLU for the CPU is 15568. It says "AXDC 2000DUT3C FSB 266, .13u, 1 year AMD Thornton BARE CPU."

Don't let them yank your chain, they either do not know what they are taking about "we only sell Tbreds and Bartons" is one thing a sales jerk told me, or else the are lying to you. I gave one sales jerk the PLU and he said it was a Tbred. I then looked at his computer screen and it said Thornton :frown: . So give them the PLU and ask if you can look at the description they have on the screen.

Good luck!

Got two of these. Both run at 166FSB (2600+) at default voltage. Great deal! Thanks OP!

Also, I tried using a pencil on the L2 bridge, but it did not work on either CPU. Both report 256KB L2.
