Fruit and Veggie Smoothies

My parents bought me one of those Bullet blenders. It's basically a small blender.

Too experiment, I went out and bought some fruits and vegetables.

Potatoes, Carrots, Tomatoes, Oranges, Bananas, etc.

I've been experimenting with throwing different amounts of stuff in there.

I really like throwing in a whole banana (peeled), an orange (peeled), a half a carrot, 1/4 potato, and a smalll tomato. I'll pour in about half a cup of 100% apple juice as well. Blend it up, and MAN it is good. The apple and banana flavor is dominant and about all I can taste.

Would this be a good thing to mix creatine into? I was thinking about tossing a serving of creatine in with it.

Ugh, potato juice sounds awful.

To answer your question, though, it would be fine to throw creatine into that mix. Creatine is best absorbed with carbohydrates, and there's plenty of them in that kind of drink.

I'm not so much concerned about the taste, I'm more wondering about why a potato? Everything else in that smoothie is broken down fast, and then you have that potato in there...

I dunno.. Why not? I thought potatoes were good for you? it's add substance, but with everythign else mixed in, you cant taste it. I figured it was for the vegetables. Next week i might get some broccoli or califlower to throw in there.

I wouldn't exactly consider potatoes good for you. They're very high in starch without much fiber. They are high in potassium though.

Please. All this fuss over 1/4 a potato? It's a POTATO, not rat poison. Not to mention that OP is eating them raw, not double deep-fried, like the majority of Americans get their potatoes (one of the highest-consumed vegetables in the country, I might add).

I'm not fussing over a quarter of a potato. I'm just correcting the OP's views that a potato is a healthy vegetable. They're not really that healthy, whether they're fried or raw. They are, however, a ball of high glycemic starches. I'd much rather substitute a sweet potato in all cases that a normal potato is used in.

That's what I was thinking. Plus the sweet potato might add a nice taste to the mix.

I disagree. They're perfectly fine as a food, but it depends how you contextualize them. Granted, there ARE better options, but there are always better options. In the first place, most people treat the potato as a starch, not a vegetable. In other words, they don't have a baked potato with rice on the side. Strictly speaking, yes, it is a tuber, but It generally replaces rice, pasta, or what have you. You're making a big deal out of what is really nothing in the big picture.

In the context of other starches, a potato packs a decent punch. I really don't think the GI is that much of an issue in that context - and it depends entirely on how the potato is cooked. But I'll shut up now, we are completely splitting hairs.

If you've ever eaten a raw sweet potato, it tastes like sweet chalk. Completely unappetizing.

Edit: Yes, a tuber is a vegetable, not a grain. The fact remains that in my opinion potatoes in comparison to grains (which is the more appropriate reference group) aren't so bad...

However, the potato IS a vegetable 😛 A tuber = vegetable. I don't eat rice or pasta because I'm not as active in endurance-related exercises as others here so I don't eat potatoes either. We are splitting hairs. We're just on differing sides of the spectrum when it comes to the potato.

Have you ever eaten a raw potato though? Has the texture of a bad apple and tastes worse. Raw sweet potatoes at least have some flavor. I imagine they'd be pretty good in a shake. Maybe I'll try that in a shake. If the OP thinks potatoes are good, then sweet potatoes gotta be king 🙂
