FRS Radios: School me on Motorola Talkabouts!

I'm about to ditch my 1999 Radio Shack 'sports' CB radio (in perfect condition with mic and a big cool Dukes of Hazzard black CB magnet antenna- yours for $50 shipped) for a set of Motorola Talkabouts. I want something with range of about 2 miles for road trips- can the pairs I've seen for $35-40 do this? Tell me what I need!

just so you know...no FRS radio will EVER hit a 2 mile radius unless you're on an open field with no trees, no traffic, and nothing to interfere with the radio transmission. Expect to get maybe a mile out of the radios, mile and a half AT MOST.

Most FRS radios are 14 channels, with 38 sub-channels. Um..the new FRS's have 18 channels with 38 sub channels. There's nothing special about the motorola's that a set of cobra's don't have.

Ok, so would they fair well on a highway with the 2nd party say, oh, a half mile ahead of you (thinking of lots of RF interference in this enviroment)?

Sorry. 🙂 Just trying to reach a target audience of those respondees who are interested in communications. I know it's taboo- won't happen again. I'm going to post it in FS/T.

My parents have a motorhome, and sometimes use these. They talk to each other when using both the camper and the car. They say they work for them. No idea about the range though, I doubt they are ever too far apart. (several cars lengths at best)

you should be alright, but don't expect this to be crystal-clear radio. You may experience a glitch or some light static every once in a while, but for your short distance, you'll be ok.

they work fine between cars, but just beware, everyone and their mother can hear what you are saying on the radios.

for more fun and games, goto vegas with one, scan around on the FRS chans. Talk to random people, hilarous results when you run into these people.

if youre only going to be in cars i doubt youll ever be more than a mile between you. With only this distance you'll be able to hear just fine.

I've had pretty good luck with FRS radios (Panasonic) during road trips but you'll NEVER reach 2 miles in the real world.

Check out the Motorola TalkAbout 6200 / 6220 several Office Depot, Office Max and Staples locations have these on clearance, I was able to snag a few brand new Motorola FRS radios for $10 each after coupon/rebate from Office Depot B&M.

Search the Hot Deals forum here or on FW for FRS, Motorola, TalkAbout or 6200 or 6220.

I'm not sure if these are even in stock in your area or if the rebate is still valid but here's two VERY HOT DEALS worth checking out:

$9.99 Motorola T289 FRS radio after $20 MIR @ Radio Shack B&M

$2.99 Motorola rechargeable FRS radio kit @ Office Depot B&M

Here's a few FRS Hot Deals.

I still think the best deal are the Motorola T289's for $9.99 after MIR at your local Radio Shack.

Great news! There's still a few left, I picked up a few more after work today and they're still at $29.99.

Best of all the rebate expires 6/30/2002 so you still have another 9 days!

Since most Radio Shacks are out of stock on these you'd be better off calling them first to see if they're in stock.

Give them the SKU which can be found here.

If they are out of stock ask them to check other area stores with their online inventory system.
