Sickeningly sweet cereal, mass marketed to kids through constant bombardment in commercials. Kids statistically hear more cereal peddling commercials than they actually hear their own parents speak. Thus contributing to an epidemic of obesity.

Of course, there are the people with the delusion "when I have a child, that'll never happen." 2 minute long commercial breaks every 4 minutes; 90 seconds of which are advertisements for cereal shaped, artificially sweetened sugar bombs - commercials which are designed by crack teams of the top child psychologists in the world to have as much influence on behavior as the vast majority of parents.

Calls of "the industry should set some voluntary standards to follow" are answered with "OMG! They're suggesting a violation of free speech!" and "Hey parents! The government is saying you're not capable of telling your child what to do! We're just playing these commercials that couldn't possibly influence your kids. "

It still comes down to the parent to do what's right. Candy cereals were never for breakfast. They were for an evening snack, like dessert. When you control the wallet, you control the food your kids eat. They can eat good, or they can eat crap, but it's the parents that choose the path.

guys, it's not like brand name cereals are high quality. the knock off versions are pretty much identical. it's sugar and some grain, not very hard to duplicate
You'd think it's not that hard but in practice most knock off cereal is shit.

I've had Froot Loops a couple times. They're not very good.

As a kid I didn't always eat sweet cereal. Sure I'd have Cocoa Puffs sometimes but one of my favorites was Wheaties. Nowadays I think my favorite in terms of balanced flavor is multi-grain Cheerios; less sawdusty than regular Cheerios and a little sweeter but not overwhelming.

Another reason why it's good to limit children's TV time.

Taste is hard to duplicate.
The store brands for Rice Krispies, Honey Nut Cherrios, Honey Bunches of Oats, orange juice, Coca-Cola, Sprite, and many others I've all tried tasted like crap.
They may have the exact same nutrients to the same exact amount, but not the same taste?
Unlike "generic" drugs, taste is a major factor for foods and cannot be ignored.

For something like Spaghetti and Macaroni though, I use store brand.

I LOVE multi grain Cheerios.

Yup, but they've changed over the years. 70s Cocoa Pebbles were better than later versions. They had several formula changes, and lost their way. They're still good, but not what they should be.

I noticed that too. In fact, cereal in general used to be lighter and crunchier. Not sure what happened.

No shit! It's cerious business

Watch it or I'll send a cereal killer after you.

I grew up with various forms of sugary cereal. I loved Froot Loops and Frosted Flakes, but I only tended to eat them at the hotel breakfast buffet (never at home). I guess I got tired of it quickly.

More often, I would just add a little sugar to a regular cereal like Rice Krispies or Product 19.

When I grew up my mom always got mostly "non" sugar cereals and one sugar cereal, and we were only allowed to have one box open. Fast forward a few decades and I now have 8 boxes of cereal in the pantry, all open, and mostly sugar cereals. The exception being life and rice krispies which I supplement with sugar.

Needless to say, my son is happy with the cereal selection in our house.

And by the way, my favorites are still Life and Peanut butter crunch.

I've tried some generic brands of cereals and they either tasted exactly the same or were even better than the name brand. I think Weis brand Fruit Loops taste better than the name brand Fruit Loops.

You're all wrong, the best sugary cereal is Reese's Peanut Butter Corn Puffs. That said I and my kids eat oatmeal, eggs or pancakes for breakfast 9 days out of 10.
