Does anyone know if these things are sold with just the bare connectors and where to get them? That's all I'd need, right? I'd rather mod my own front usb ports than take up a drive bay with a cheap looking one.

thanks!

I pulled some off (ie: desoldered) of a junk daughter board I found on a trashed machine I got at the dump.

There are two kinds of USB front plugs: Either they have all wires separated so u can easily connect them to your mobo USB pinout or they have all the wires stuck together in a nice clean connector.

BUT: It is not said that the connector has them in the right order for your mobo!! U always have to make sure, which sometimes means taking the wires out of the connector, that the USB front plug wires are connected to the accoring pins on your mobo. If u don't do that --> say goodbuy to mobo and USB hardware in the worst case.

Take a look here!

For those of us that have phat phingers, these little nubbins or connectors are a major PITA. I'm not sure why we can't standardize this config but I'd like to see that next.

Excellent link there, thanks. Wish I had that awhile back when I needed to rewire some USB header connectors. I didn't kill anything - just took awhile to find all the neccessary information - and a voltmeter w/continuity tester function to figure out which wire went to which pin.

Hehe ... I just learned that site a few days ago cause I had a similar problem and asked on the motherboard forum about my front USB wiring and I got that link as an answer and it helped me a lot, too. Buz2b helped me on that one.

That's why I like these forums so much! :D

While everyone has replied with excelent information, I believe you have all missed TripperJoe's question.

I think he wants to know if the cables are sold with a header on one end, and bare wires on the other.

He wants to build his own front USB add on, and wants to know if he can just buy the wires for it.

Of course, with the link that BlackMountainCow gave us, he could just figure out his own wiring now.... ;)
