Front Panel Audio - not working

I've never had wiring problems before, but lo and behold, my front panel audio doesn't work. I guess that's because this is my first (self-built rig) case that had front pane audio.

I'm not sure if it's a software problem, or a problem with the connections between the case and the motherboard, but I'm looking for suggestions either way. The connection labels in the motherboard and case manuals were a little bit different, so it's possible that I screwed those up. On the other hand, I never installed software for the motherboard's onboard sound. Finally, I also have a PCI sound card - should the FP audio be connected to this in someway, or still to the motherboard?

So what's the hitch? Do I need to track down and install the sound drivers, or are my pins just screwed up? I know it's hard to tell without being able to see the pin configurations, but I'm just looking for a "most likely" scenario before I get home to look at it tonight.

Thanks. 🙂

So which sound do you want to use? Or are you trying to use both sound devices at once for different purposes?

Does Device Manager show a big yellow question mark for the onboard sound?

Yes, but it lists it as a PCI device (which is strange). I know for a fact the X-FI is installed and working correctly.

I'm would prefer to use the X-FI. I just wasn't sure if it had a pin configuration for the FP Audio connectors. This is my first time wiring a case with FP audio. 😛

If your using a pci sound card your onboard sound should be disabled in the bios, so connecting to the board is not going to work. Go to your soundcards web site. The card may or not support front panel audio.

I have an X-Fi extreme music and I haven't figured out how to get it to work. Interested to see if there are any work arounds.
