Front load washers were all you could get about 50 years or so ago. The switch to top load ers came about because they were cheaper to build. Top loaders have never been as good at cleaning as front loaders, nor as efficient in terms of water and power consumption. What europeans have to say about america's top load washer is true. Top loaders are the dinosaurs of washing machines. Personally, I like the washer/dryer combos - a single unit that washes and dries. Takes longer, but costs much less to operate than any separates.
Fisher & Paykel seem to make nice, energy efficient top load washers.
Might be slightly cheaper than the front -loading LG Tromm.

Yep. You save water and potentially power. They are supposed to clean your clothes better because of their use of gravity. (sorta like a tumble dryer)
You better hope the seal holds and nothing breaks. Chances are, parts are much less standard and probably marked up 30-50% just because the unit itself is more expensive.
I bought the kenmore elite 5t. Well, the wife insisted on it. Extremely quiet machines compared to the old agitator machines i had in the past. Washing takes longer, but it really isnt an issue.
My sister had the Whirlpool duet sport. She lived in a second floor apartment and it was loud, but when placed on solid ground it is fairly quiet.

I decided to go to my local Fry's and pick up the LG Tronn front load washer/dryer. They had a deal going on over the 4th: $999 for the pair of them (regularly $799/ea.). So, I'm anxious to see how well they work over the years!
We like our Kenmore front loader. You don't have to worry about overfilling it. If you can get the door closed you're good. It's quiet, it uses half the water and the clothes come out half dry because it spins so fast. I'll never go back to a top loader.
Also we've had it for 5 years and it gets run everyday because I have two toddlers. So far so good.

I sincerely doubt you have a single Frigidaire that's a Maytag anything.
Frigidaire is a completely separate company, and always has been, from Maytag.
Frigidaire is owned by Electrolux and has been since 1986....before that, between 1919 and 1980, it was an independent company within General Motors, and between 1980 and 1986, part of White Industries, which also owns Westinghouse.
Maytag has always been an independent company, too, until their buyout in 2005/6 by Westinghouse, and the company was then essentially dissolved while the name continues to be used by Westinghouse as a brand only.
Before Maytag was bought out by Westinghouse, Maytag had acquired many names over the years, including Amana, Hoover, Admiral, Magic Chef, Jenn-Air, among others.....but at no time was responsible for building Frigidaire appliances.
But you're correct that Kenmore is just a brand name stuck on other manufacturer's products.....much like PC Power & Cooling power supplies are just Seasonic/Win-tact power supplies built for the PCP&C company with their name slapped on them.

That's exactly why, after one week, I replaced the Duet Sport set that I had purchased. The Samsung set that replaced it has been great so far. It starts rocking every once and awhile, but it seems to sense it's rocking, back off for a while (or even stops and lets the clothes fall into the bottom of the tub so that they can be better balanced) and then restarts the spin cycle. So much better than the Duet Sport (at least on a second floor) that it's not funny.
Good deal. We are still happy with our LG's. I tried to find a american washer/dryer but still came back to the LG after reading their specs and all the reviews for them.
That's great to hear! The only thing I didn't purchase was the extended warranty from Fry's...and that'll probably bite me in the ass down the road, but here's hoping that it doesn't!!

My mom has a Frigidaire front loader set. They are very good and I like them a lot. However, you have to be a bit more careful with the drain inside them getting jammed than you would a top loader. In the first month of ownership, my mom broke the drain on the washer. The culprit? A wire framed bra managed to lose its wire and get caught in there. The repairman said not to wash them in the washer, ever.

Yea I got the warranty on the washer as if it breaks it leaks water and the board alone would make me have to buy a new one vs repairing. The dryer I did not get the warranty on as there is not as much to it and worse case I bypass the sensor and use it like a classic manual dryer.

Picked up a samsung set for $899 at Frys (Black Saturday - reg price for the pair was around $1600) and they were delivered yesterday...decided to get the 5 year warranty for $240 (only $60 more than the 3 year warranty)...
Wash times do take a bit longer, but the dryer times are alot shorter...the washing machine is very quiet...

we bought our whirlpool duet series a year ago and no problems. as far as the moldy smell, the owners manual even says to keeo the washer door ajar after the cycle to prevent the smell.

We have a whirlpool duet series and yeah, just leave the front door open to dry out (and yes, you should have to do that), and its fine. Run it through the clean cycle once in awhile and we've had no mildew issues in almost 2 years. 2 kids under 4 won't matter since they can't climb up into it and the door is just open a crack. Use some discipline with your children and boom, non issue.
People with top loaders don't have an airtight seal so no, they dont need to leave the top of their washer open. I understand your model had a pump problem, but others with whirlpool models have complained about the mildew issue and in all cases i've read, they did not follow the directions in the manual on how to combat that issue.

Don't get all gaga over front loaders yet. They tend to have less capacity then their top loading counterparts---forget washing large blankets or comforters. Also, if something happens to them in mid-cycle (my mom was a victim of this), you have to open the door and water pours everywhere.
On the plus side, they tend to use less water and they're a bit easier to load/unload.

This doesn't make sense? How can a front loader have less capacity when it doesn't have the huge agitator 'thingey' in the middle taking up a huge amount of space in the tub?
Not having an agitator is one of the biggest selling points of a front loader...plus the agitator is what causes more wear/tear on the clothes which you won't have to worry about with a front loader...
