OMG. Please tell me that is not your car. I cannot believe the people who buy the dumb grinning Mazdas. That is the ugliest front end ever.

Yeah, I cringe when I see them. It looks like the Joker or something. Really INSANE looking face.

If I had one of those I'd cover it up with 10 license plates

The reason for a front license plate is to provide a retroreflector for laser guns

I honestly never even noticed the "smile" until I read some comments made on a Mazda forum about it.

Some lighter colors really make it stand out, but I don't think its that bad on mine.

Front plates look like crap. For example.. my black car with no plate in the 1st pic (mine is in the front window):

and another black car with the plate

You're right, it's not bad. I'd only seen them in red and white, which are so bright that it really stands out.

THIS. It is NOT legal to have it there instead of on the bumper. You may not receive as much harassment for having it there instead of having nothing, but it's certainly not legal. It's also ugly, and could possibly be dangerous in an accident if you don't have it secured.

It can also CAUSE an accident if you don't have it secured. A number of years ago, I went on a date with a girl who drove a Miata, and for some reason she had her front plate sitting on the passenger side of the dashboard. She let me drive her car on the date, and on my way to drop her off at her house I pulled a tight turn on the residential streets a few streets away from her house. The license plate slid across the dashboard and somehow wedged itself into the steering wheel, on top of the turn signal stalk. It more-or-less locked the steering wheel into the turned position, so I was headed straight for a curb if I didn't straighten out the car. I did so, forcefully, and broke off the turn signal stalk with the license plate. Better than running into the curb or possibly a mailbox, but still a crappy outcome.

Is it that big of deal? I have never bought a car that did not have the front license plate holder....Then again, I live in MA. It has been the law to have it front and back for a while.

that smile is a reflection of Mazda Corp. It's an evil grin because he bought a Mazda. Mazda is just smiling because they got the cheap Ford parts and still manages to call it a Japanese car.

i wish all states had a front license plate law. i got hit by some dumb woman once, as I was going through a light. i stopped immediately after the intersection and got out, she just turned right and sped away. if front plates were required, I would have gotten her license plate #

Front license plates make more money for the state. Eliminating them would cost the state money. Cost to charge for them and money they make from tickets from the pictures on intersection cameras. Most major states require them.

Most states have laws like this to give a cop a cause to pull someone over that hasn't done anything else wrong. It gives them a legal in to profile and look for drugs ect.

WTF? You were dumb.

Simply missing a front plate is not probable cause for a search. It's a primary offense for which you can get pulled over, but it does not come remotely close to rising to the level of probable cause to allow an officer to search a vehicle to "look for drugs" or anything else.
