For one of my cars, in CA and now in TX, I have never used mine

There's no real easy way to so I just don't do it...haven't been pulled over in 2 1/2 years of ownership

Coming up I95 from Florida a few years ago, we played a game: identify the NJ driver before you could see their plate. We correctly identified at least 90% of them, with very few false positives from drivers of other states.

I'll forever be grateful to the NJ driver weaving in and out of traffic who weaved in front of me just in time to take out the deer that hopped in front of me. It had my name all over it, but totalled the front of the NJ car instead. If by any chance, it was one of you, thanks :)

Just don't put it on your car. My Miata has never had a front plate in NY. I've never been stopped for it either.

Tell me about it.... I grew up in PA where no front plate is required. But I just bought my first car ('05 Mazda3) and I now live in NYC so my beautiful new car has an ugly wart on its chin.

I have a front plate. It's in the pocket behind my seat. I put it in the windshield when I go to areas with front plate enforcement. (SF, LA)

I live in TX and I ain't putting any plates on the front of my car. It's highly unlikely they'll give you a ticket for it, and if so, I'll pay it. Like I said, I'm not messing up the front of my car.

I love it! I have a sunlight silver Mazda3s sedan with an automatic tranny and the sport package (17" wheels and side sill extensions). The car is great! The only car in the same class that I've driven is an '02 Civic LX, and the Mazda3s is much more fun. Besides that, the only cars I've driven extensively are an '86 Chevrolet Celebrity, a '95 Chevrolet Lumina, and a '95 Pontiac Grand Am, and the Mazda3s is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better than all of those, but that goes without saying.

SO that the plates can be read from the front,
especially helpful with all the Cameras around nowadays.

NY State has had both rear, and, front plates Mandatory
since 1965. Thats 40 years.

Live with it,or get a traffic ticket/hassled by the Police.
I know a Police Officer that said he writes at least 5 no plate tickets a day. :)

Here is DMV answer in NY State.

Question
Can I use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates on my NYS registered vehicle? What if there is only one location on my vehicle to attach a vehicle plate?

Answer
If the DMV issues two vehicle plates for your vehicle, you must use both vehicle plates. Put one vehicle plate on the front of the vehicle and one vehicle plate on the back of the vehicle. There are no exemptions to this requirement.

If there is only one location on your vehicle to attach a vehicle plate, contact a parts store to get a device to attach the other vehicle plate to your vehicle.

The NYS Police and other law enforcement agencies recommend that vehicles display two vehicle plates. The two vehicle plates help the police to identify vehicles. The NYS vehicle plates use a reflective material, and the two vehicle plates improve the visibility of vehicles at night

If you use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates, you can receive a fine of $25 to $200 and mandatory surcharges of $50.

The DMV issues one vehicle plate for some vehicles. These vehicles include trailers, motorcycles, and the tractor unit of a tractor-trailer.

Actually, Ohio is considering getting rid of the front plates to save money. Of course the state highway patrol had to come in and say they think its a bad idea. Their reasons were that people have a better chance of identifying a hit and run driver if they have the opportunity to see the plate twice and the plates help other drivers identify a left of center car with no lights on because the plate reflects light.

Removing the front plate was considered in Colorado. It would have saved the state some $1.5 million. Unfortunately the police got together and protested the possible change. If they're so important to have in the front then shouldn't it make sense that they be on the sides also? <shudder>

putting a license plate behind your windshield is a terrible idea. what happens if someone needs to quickly stop or gets hit? You pretty much have a flying knife in your car at head/upper torso level.

I've never got a ticket for it. Even when I've been pulled over for other things the cops don't mention it.

Front plates are a nice, big, nearly flat piece of metal that can reflect radar to the highway patrol. I think that's the secret reason the cops want them to stay around.

It's required in WI, also, but I've gone without the front plate all-together for the past 2 years. I've never gotten a ticket or a warning. I'll pay the fine and be on my way if I do get one.

Same here basically...required in TX, but my front license plate holder was broken off the car when I bought it six months ago, and I haven't yet bothered to try to re-attach it yet.

Well, I know that it makes some cars look really ugly, but then, shouldn't it have been designed from the start not to look so ugly with them on? A great car designer would have done that, or else he ain't so great, is he?

Anyway, here are some benefits I came up with after a couple of seconds thinking.

Here in South Africa, licence plates are reflective, so they serve as front reflectors, so you can see a car that is maybe standing still on the road with no lights on, or a car driving towards you with its lights off.

Or say, what about hit-and-run accident, pedestrian or vehiclelar? Normally the accident happens on the front of the car, so there may be a good chance the front licence plate falls off, so it can be used as a way to track the suspect vehicle.

i love how it justifies the front plate by saying it improves visibility at night...i guess it could...if you drive at night with your lights off

Well, I bet have you seen how some people drive, would it surprise you that some people drive with their lights off, mostly cause they don't even realise it?

Its the same as driving with your lights on when is raining, its not to that you can see better, its so that others can see you better, because its all hazy and such.
