Question
Can I use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates on my NYS registered vehicle? What if there is only one location on my vehicle to attach a vehicle plate?

Answer
If the DMV issues two vehicle plates for your vehicle, you must use both vehicle plates. Put one vehicle plate on the front of the vehicle and one vehicle plate on the back of the vehicle. There are no exemptions to this requirement.

If there is only one location on your vehicle to attach a vehicle plate, contact a parts store to get a device to attach the other vehicle plate to your vehicle.

The NYS Police and other law enforcement agencies recommend that vehicles display two vehicle plates. The two vehicle plates help the police to identify vehicles. The NYS vehicle plates use a reflective material, and the two vehicle plates improve the visibility of vehicles at night

If you use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates, you can receive a fine of $25 to $200 and mandatory surcharges of $50.

The DMV issues one vehicle plate for some vehicles. These vehicles include trailers, motorcycles, and the tractor unit of a tractor-trailer.

i love how it justifies the front plate by saying it improves visibility at night...i guess it could...if you drive at night with your lights off

Or maybe if the car is parked?

if the cars are parked on the side of the road, and if you're closer to the ones facing toward you, you're on the wrong side of the road. the back plates are enough

What if its dark a suburban road (and the parked car is a black car) and your travelling at a highish speed, and the car is facing you, but parked on your side of the road (because the guy came to visit a friend and parked in front of his friends house without bothering to make a U turn)?

(That can happen, since if you have ever seen how people drive and what they do with their cars, this is entirely possible scenario)

And what about my theory:

Or say, what about hit-and-run accident, pedestrian or vehiclelar? Normally the accident happens on the front of the car, so there may be a good chance the front licence plate falls off, so it can be used as a way to track the suspect vehicle.

It has happened.

...they make the car look fugly...

No matter how many fart cans, spoilers, ground effects, or stickers you add, and no matter how many plates it has, it's still just a run of the mill, 4dr, FWD econobox. GET OVER IT!

if visibility was that big of a deal then why don't they make it mandatory to have plates on the sides of cars? or add 50 cents worth of reflective tape that would act better to reflect light than a license plate? if reflectivity was so important then the state would reprint license plates for those plates that are old enough to lose their reflectiveness. they don't.

Nobody said the state was intelligent enough for that SportSC4. Maybe you should become the state ;)

The state hit on a one kind of brilliant idea and as a government of most sorts does, rested on their laurels without further improving on their ideas.
