About to put regular plates on my new car and having to put em on the front just makes me sad... they make the car look fugly and my state (CA) requires em. this = suck

you can put em on your front dash or to the side on your front bumper but these are ghetto looking solutions...or just have rear plates and risk getting a ticket.

Can someone tell me the reason(s) why some states, such as TX and CA, require front plates? Is it for safety? or maybe the cops in those states are not too smart, they need to read the plates TWICE? LOL.

Because it gives them an opportunity to pull over people from out of state. Generally you're looking at states with lots of out of state traffic passing through. They give tons of tickets to out of staters too.

I guess I'm just used to them, but I don't think they make cars look any uglier than without them... and I also don't think it's legal to put it on your dash... and I have NO idea how it makes it look better if it's on the side of your bumper.

Slightly better chance of your car being identified should the need arise.

Most jurisdictions requiring front plates allow windshield mounting or some other provision for vehicles where front bumper mounting simply doesn't work.

Do this. Strap the front plate to the flip down visor/vanity mirror of the passenger seat.

Yep. Frankly is suprises me that more states don't require them, I've always thought it's loopy that you can only identify a car one way: driving away.

In NY the plates must be in the designated license plate holder on the car (front and back), inside or elsewhere is illegal. That being said, I don't really care.

Well the split is probably close to 80-20 or even higher; try it some time. By the time you identify that a car has done something 'interesting' and want its plate number, it's usually past you.

But it's cheap enough to put the plate on the front, so if it helps once in a while, I figure it's a good idea.

some people (mostly ricers) put the licence plate to the side of their front bumper because it blocks the airflow to the radiator. which it does, but i wish we could do away with them alltogether.

Ya, I'm not going to argue the rear is easily the most useful spot, but the benefits of an additional front plate still seem to be greater than the cons of doing so.

Let me understand this - they can pull an out-of-stater over for not having a front license plate? I just drove through Ohio and I wasn't pulled over for not having a front plate. I'm from PA.

Taken from link:

"Second, a front license plate restricts the performance of passenger vehicles."

Yeah, lawmakers are gonna buy that one.

"Additionally, police officers will be more productive in stopping dangerous motor vehicle violations such as drunk driving, reckless driving, speeding, etc., because their time won't be compromised by stopping or ticketing a Ohio motorist who simply did not have a front license plate on display."

Uh, they do realize that municipalities (and states) love minor motor vehicle violations like this because they're a cash cow?

You can get away with having it on the air dam. I know some FBody guys that do that here in Ohio.

No. Many people believe that cops prefer to pull over people from out of state. Out of staters are less likely to contest the ticket, and then there's the animosity between people from different states. Ask anyone who the worst drivers are, they'll tell you it's the people from their neighboring state(s). PA drivers suck by the way. Having a front license plate lets Ohio cops identify who's from Ohio, and therefore who is not (either because they have no front plate or a front plate from another state).
