If Windows 7 runs slowly on your system then your system must be ancient. I ran 7 on a single core netbook with 2gb of ram and even then it was still faster than Xp.

+1

I beefed up few old Laptops/ memory (anything above 1.2GB will do) and installed Starter on them.

It works well faster and nicer than XP.

There is Windows XP x64 just like Windows 7 is available in x32 or x64.

Not really. Windows 7 32 and Windows 7 64 are largely identical, except the kernel and drivers. Windows XP 64 was an afterthought and is really a consumer version of Server 2003 64 bit with some Windows XP apps added in.

Besides, I'd be willing to bet that 99.99% of the the people who claim to love XP over 7 aren't using 64bit XP.

Thread #234098234908 about how XP is better than Win7...!

Prediction of the conclusion of this thread:
70% of the responses say Win7 is better (I'm in this group)
30% say XP is better (but most of these admit that it's old, unsupported, and you should move on)
Ignoring the majority voting for Win7, the OP reinstalls XP and proclaims life to be good again

Two days later, a similar thread starts and we repeat.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to get the classic theme in 7. I forget how though. One of the first things I looked for when I setup windows 7 on our church computer.

Is this some sort of ongoing joke? Right click desktop, select "personalize", pick windows classic theme. It's so easy I was just assuming the OP was trolling when he complained about it's absence.

I have to agree in some circumstances XP feels snappier, but in the vast majority of tasks Windows 7 is dramatically superior. There really is no comparison. The fact that countless business computers are still running XP doesn't take away from this. Many business computers still run software much much older than WinXP and that doesn't mean better software isn't out there. It means they don't want to bother with the time, money, and risk involved in CHANGE. Think on the scale of thousands or tens of thousands of computers, and you can begin to understand why so many companies have computers running old software. Not to mention the cost of the software upgrades.

Technically Windows7 is definitely superior to XP in virtually all aspects. The fact that some legacy software doesn't run quite right in Win7 is completely normal. The same issue affects XP with lots of software that was "older" relative to XP!

The solution? Use VMWare or VirtualBox. Any software that you absolutely can't get to work right natively in 7, you run in an XP virtual machine. Insanely easy.

As far as "ease of use" is concerned, well... lol. That's largely opinion. Obviously if you are USED to WinXP, you will find the change takes some getting used to. Seriously people, how do you deal with other changes in life if going from XP to 7 is too much? lol

and regarding the "adding more RAM isn't an answer" idea... uhhh, what? XP runs ok on 2GB ram, but start multitasking and you'll find that 2GB is insufficient. Sadly, you can't use much more unless you get 64-bit OS, and XP 64 doesn't have the same compatibility as the 32 bit version. You can run Win7 on 2GB as well, and it'll be fine, again until you start multitasking more. 7 runs beautifully on 4GB RAM (which is insanely cheap).

That is probably true because I use the standard version of Windows XP myself.

The first thing I did when I installed Windows 7 was to make it look more like Windows XP by switching off Aero after a few minutes of using it ofcourse lol ;)

I'm convinced there's an alternate reality where Windows XP is still king, and Windows 7 really does suck. Also, Windows Vista DIDN'T suck in this alternate reality. Sometimes the fabric of space/time short circuits and people living from this alternate reality cross over with ours, and they create threads like this.

Meanwhile, in THIS universe, in THIS reality; though Windows XP was a great operating system, Windows 7 is better in virtually every conceivable way.

Probably 98% of any decent software that normal individuals want to use and not some old relic from a bygone era that people are clinging to rather than finding a modern solution or applying an update, runs perfectly fine in Windows 7.

In this reality: I've installed Windows 7 on everything from the oldest, weakest, most dilapidated one-step-from-doorstop PC, to the fastest, most ultra-modern all the bells and whistles PC, and in virtually every case it's been a much better performer than XP. It's been my experience if a device runs the most updated integration of XP well, it will run 7 even better, and actually be speedier and more of a pleasure to use. And if it's too old to have Win 7 drivers at all, then it's too old to be using anyway.

But somehow in the alternate reality, the opposite is true.

I'll stick with this reality.

I did not have a windows 7 machine in front of me to check. I don't just memorize these things, why would I? I did it like 2 years ago, so I did not remember how and never really dealt with 7 beyond that.

I absolutely hate it when people do that. It makes it so much harder to find things. One of our clients did that for all of his Win2K8 servers and it's so frustrating, I even had MS support ask me how to start cmd as admin on their systems because he couldn't remember where the cmd icon was in the legacy look.

Well I run xp of several systems and Win 7 on one. I can understand what the op is saying. Those of us that upgraded from win9x/2k to Win xp seen a great leap in Microsoft Oses. We have been running xp for so long it's hard to replace it. It more of a nostalgic thing now. I myself know that we have to move on due to hardware and software advances which Xp don't utilize to full extent. I mean look at the directx deal with memory (win xp shadowing vid memory into system memory). Under win 7 you have more memory available to games and such as opposed to winxp. And that's just one of the many advantages Win 7 has over Xp. I will still have xp systems running after Microsoft decides to no longer support it. I do like win xp over win 7. But we must continue to ride the changing os train as long as tech advances. I just hope they come up with a Os that has the staying power of Xp. This is just my opinions, I have not been paid or coerced in anyway by anyone or any ententy living or deceased. Go 3dfx

Windows 7 is slow. While it does have better memory management and has faster file transfer over the network than on WinXP, the OS still runs sluggish compare to Server OSes. Adding more RAM will not solve this. The OS is just slow... for some people, they think it's ok, but for me, slowwwwwww.............

To get the Windows 7 to run descently, you will need to set it to Windows Classic theme. Aero themes and other junk all slows down. Disable Indexing service via services too. Turn off system protection and it will perform slightly better than Windows XP, but still slower than Server 2003.
