From the Dog Pound, to the Army, to Iraq, and Back

I thought that ended with "and back to the pound" and I was prepared for sad face.

I love military dogs. 🙂
I'd love to be one of the handlers.

Sad face definitely comes into play with their sacrifices (including the handlers).

They give ranks and promotions to dogs? Do they get uniforms too? Does he get an increase in his food allowance or what?

They give ranks and promotions to dogs?

They didn't used to... But I guess they do now...

Almost all of the Military Working dogs, including the one I had, are trained at Lackland AFB. Its the largest dog training facility in the world.

The article closes with a quote from Gabe's handler, who adapted him after he retired...

“Me and that dog have gone through a lot together,” ... “I can’t count the number of times he’s saved my life. He’s stubborn and he can be a butthead. But I love him to death."

Indeed!

They began giving the dogs Military ranks to ensure the Dog always out ranked its handler. This is done to ensure the handler is caring properly for their dog and if they abuse the dog they can be punished under the UCMJ for either disrespecting or harming a Superior.

General Scooby Doo reporting for duty!

I'm not familiar with military protocol but at what rank are you required to salute your superior?

BWAHAHAHA, that's the funniest thing I've heard. There would be a bunch of E-8 dogs running around.

I just want to know if he gets his own dog tags....

No dogtags.

But all of our dogs had unique ID numbers tattooed on the inside of their left ear.

While my dog didn't have a rank, I have read about the concept. Here is a dot mil article that discusses the phenomena.

http://www.army.mil/article/56965/Military_Working_Dogs__Guardians_of_the_Night/

Specifically, it states:
Every military working dog is an NCO - in tradition at least. Some say the custom was to prevent handlers from mistreating their dogs; hence, a dog is always one rank higher than its handler.

"That's out of respect," said Sgt. 1st Class Regina Johnson, operations superintendent at the Military Working Dog School. "I see it all the time, especially in these young handlers. They make the mistake of thinking they're actually in charge.
