From T-bird to a Q6600

I'm finally taking the plunge and upgrading my super ancient 1.4ghz Athlon to a Q6600. I would like to know if I'm going to be upgrading to a processor that draws more electricity and outputs more heat than my current processor. It's a concern of mine since my t-bird is a space heater and I'd like to avoid that if possible. As you probably can tell, I like to keep my PC's for a good long time before upgrading, so what do you guys think is a wise move for me? Aside from web browsing, I mostly use photoshop and RAW image editors, with some gaming on the side. Thanks in advance!

Q6600 runs very hot. I doubt you need a quad core. A higher end c2d will probably suit you better. Not sure how hot it runs in comparison to the athlon.

It will probably run at around the same temps as your current cpu, which isn't bad considering it's 4 cores rather than 1 like you have now. But if everything you run is good on that old CPU, a quad core is likely a major overkill..

Thanks for the info guys.
Not everything runs good on the old CPU -- actually Photoshop and the rendering of images crawls, and I need something that will last me a good long time. Do you think the Quad will hold better down the road than a dual?

for photoshop, and encoding the quad is a definite better choice. However, i would seriously look into an aftermarket heatsink for this monster.

A lot of people are realizing now what ive been stating 3-4 months ago when i started playing with quads. There not easy to cool.

But since photoshop is a multithreaded application, a lower clocked quad would definitely be much faster then a slightly higher clocked dual core.

But if your also photoshoping, and your still running a t-bird, i would also look into getting faster drives. It helps a lot in photoshop and encoding programs.

You made a great choice, you'll love your QUAD.

And you really should look into getting a better cooler for it.

I highly recommend the Tuniq Tower 120 for the Price / Performance.

The best is the Thermalright Ultra / Xtreme 120 which will cost you a good $20 - $30 more!

After July 22...

Just buy a Q6600 for ~$266 and a Tuniq Tower 120 for ~$60....Then.....

Enjoy that system for at least the next 5 years!!!.....

Wont see much of a difference between the t-bird and quad :p

going be a nice system but as other people have said you probably wont need the quad for what you will be doing. Plus they are a biznitch to cool.

You will be definitely happy with Q6600. I upgraded from the same 1.4Ghz TBird to E6400. I am using C1Pro to convert RAW to JPG, it can utilize 2 cores and is at 5 times faster. Music convertion (APE to FLAC) is also ~3 times faster with single core comparison, I run 2 conversion jobs, so it is at least 5 times faster for music conversion.

Of course, not every program can use 2/4 cores, but C2D/C2Q is definitely fast. For you, it would be day and night difference. Don't hesitate.

This is funny. Or is that a sarcasm emoticon at the end of your statement? :D

I think that he meant to add "won't see much of a difference between tbird and quad when playing risk in win 95..."

I love this funny infinite mirror effect ... anyways I don't think you'll see much of a difference if you just playing an older game like Starcraft I, instead of 50 FPS you'll get like 50000 but that don't make no difference in actual game play.

you must be using a quad core because there's no way a tbird could handle this many mirrors!
