From a *merchant*'s perspective, is there a better (cheaper) alternative to PayPal?

merchant accounts with banks cost a lot, and this is just a non-profit.

thanks...

I did some research awhile back. A merchant account and payment gateway was around $200 setup and 2.5% per sale. That is great concerning payment processing.

Otherwise, checkout www.recevom.com. One time setup, 3.95% of sale, no monthly fee.

IMHO, credit card processing is a scam. The banks are already gouging most of John Q. Public at 18% APR AND, they have to take another 4 points from the merchant. Visa and MC international is nothing but a heartless multi-national corporation bent on screwing over global small business.

No one's forcing people to buy anything on credit...they can pay for everything in cash for all Visa cares.

IMHO anyone that pays interest on credit card purchases is an idiot (we are giving our opinions right?). Credit cards also have this nifty feature of protecting you from fraud and fradulent merchants. Real merchants pay 2.5%ish for purchases where the card isn't swiped, where they are they pay about 1.5%. In fact the % they take off the top is a direct function of how much fraud that particular line of business recieves. Credit cards and the laws that were passed that granted consumers rights were one of the greatest things to ever occur in the money transaction business. Frankly I can't imagine still being in a world where you have to carry $200 around with you "just in case".

I totally agree. No one is forcing credit card users to pay interest.
