so far i've managed to OC my abit ic7max3 from 3.0 to 3.3, and a shuttle 3.06 to 3.62.

i'd like to find a combination which is reliable at 4.0 GHz. with the P4 3.6 selling for about $400, i was thinking about building a system based on that (the P4 3.6).

LGA775 + 865P

i haven't seen any reviews of the MSI hybrid board, the neo3, which combines LGA775 with AGP and DDR400 via the 865 chipset. but their first 865 board performed really well in some reviews. also ... i like "MSI red".

about the asus p5p ... it also combines the LGA775 with the 865P. seeing a lot of people bundling LGA775 systems with the p5p here in san diego.

LGA775 + 875P

DFI Lan Party & Shuttle SB81P both offer this combination.

LGA775 + 9X5

well, the Asus p5ad got a good review from anantech.

if i go the LGA775 + 9X5 route, i'll need new memory, a new graphics card, as well as the motherboard + CPU ... $1000+

if i go the LGA775 + 865P route, i'll just need the MB + CPU ... $500

given the success tom's hardware had with the MSI 865P neo in their 2003 MB 'round-up'
http://www6.tomshardware.com/m...rd/20030707/index.html

... i'm thinking that the MSI neo3 which combines the 865P with the LGA775 might be a fun choice.

PLUS ... maybe it shouldn't matter but ... i like the color - the "MSI red".

to maximize my fun - get a hybrid board now, wait 6 months for the prices to drop, then get the p5ad.

i'd love to see some reviews of overclocking with the hybrid boards. so far i've found some reviews of the DFI & shuttle 875P + LGA775 MB/ system, but ... nothing about OCing with the 865-775 combination.

if the MSI board performed great in 2003 with socket 478 ... it seems like there's a good chance it's "brother" will do well with LGA775.

anyway, just WINDOW-SHOPPING OUT LOUD.

anybody else have the MSI neo3 or ASUS p5p hybrid MB's ?

thanks !!

I think that is a wise move if your looking to save $$$. I also looked at that option but ended up with the P4 3.6 and a GigaByte I915 m/b. I have it running at 4.0. Sweet. But runs very HOT and took me awhile to figure out how to get the temps down. Also, PCIe and DDR2 offer no performance increases. But cost a lot more $$$.

The Gigabyte board I have is the hybrid, takes DDR and DDR2 and has a GEAR slot which is an AGPe slot. The only problem with the hybrids is the AGP or GEAR slot is really a PCI slot. So yes, you can use your existing AGP card. But expect a reduction of about 40% in performance.

I just think it's a bad time to spend a lot on the bleeding edge, since so much has to be resolved through next summer and fall.

My gripe about the P5P800 Asus is that it GIVES you LGA775 with conventional PCI and SATA. But no . . . . freakin' . . . . . RAID . . . !! (Grrrrr!)

Why could they not have bundled the ICH5 INtel RAID controller with this board? It just . . . doesn't make sense. It would have been so, so good to have LGA775 with PCI and AGP together with SATA RAID.

well it's an extra $50 or something ... could SATA RAID be added to the p5p ? or is it pointless because of bandwidth constraints assoc. with PCI bus ?

would love to see AT do an article on this subject - "spend $500 for an upgrade using a hybrid board, which allows me to bring along some decent hardware, OCZ platinum ddr433 + an MSI 5600 VTD graphics card, or ... spend $1200-$1500 for an upgrade using pci-e and ddr2 ?"

Does the ICH5 southbridge have the SATA on the PCI bus? I thought it was more advanced than that. According to here it looks like the SATA isn't on the PCI bus?

I have a similiar setup if you want to check the link in my sig. Apparently though anything on the Asus P5P800 and similiar 865P boards you get graphical tearing in certain applications with TCCD RAM once you reach ~220 FSB. I've seen it happening on mine. The DFI 875 board looks good and I want to replace my P5P800 with that seeing it has Raid etc and no issues.

I'm using the Abit AS8, it has great overclocking features, and ICH5R SATA raid. I have a crappy engineering sample 3.2 running at 3.6ghz. With a 3.4 or 3.6 and good cooling, you should be able to hit 4ghz. I'd go for an E0 stepping chip.

What sort of cooling is the best for low temps with these prescotts? I'm seriously thinking about watercooling. I have mine clocked to 3.6Ghz as well with a huge cooler on it, but it performs pretty poorly as when I have the case side on, the ambient temp rises to over 35C and it starts to throttle according to ThrottleWatch.

I just sold the 3.6ghz and the MSI 865PE neo3 set up. It was easy to OC it to 4ghz. My ram was the only thing holding me back. The biggest problem I had was cooling ..... that chip is HOT! So hot that it scared me enough to sell it in favor of a 3500+ Ive had cpu temps reach 88c with a thermaltake HSF and artic silver on. About 85c with the stock intel HSF.
Good luck..... and btw I sold my 1 month old set up for $419

I am using the Thermalright XP-120, there is an adaptor kit you can get for LGA775. At 3.6ghz my load temps are between 55c and 60c, and no thermal throttling.

I've got the Shuttle SB81P w/ the 3.2GHz LGA 775... I'd love to OC to 3.6GHz.

You realize a 400Mhz increase on a p4 is like a 250Mhz increase on an AMD 64... hardly anything youll acrually see/feel

Try and get the e-0 which is the 'J' markign on the name. (the 560J and the 570J.) I think those are the only 2 with e-0.
