Frito-Lay pulling biodegradable Sun Chips bag because people complain it's too noisy?

Seriously? People are bitching that a (compostable) snack chip bag is too fucking noisy?

NEW YORK – Frito-Lay hopes to quiet complaints about its noisy SunChips bags by switching out the biodegradable bags for the old packaging on most flavors.

The company is switching back to original packaging, which is made of a type of plastic, for five of the six varieties of the chips. It will keep the biodegradable and recyclable bags for its sixth variety, its original plain flavor. That's its second best-selling, after Harvest Cheddar.

The snack maker said the switch started in the middle of September and should be complete by middle to late October.

The bags were launched in April 2009 with a big marketing effort to play up their compostability because they're made from plants and not plastic.

But that which makes them compostable also makes them loud. The bags have a different molecular structure from the original packaging, so people complained about the noise. Groups on Facebook abound with names such as "I wanted SunChips but my roommate was sleeping..." and and "Nothing is louder than a SunChips bag."

Spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez said the company received complaints about the noise from the bags, although it also received thanks from customers who liked being able to recycle them.

So the decision was made to remove the bulk of the biodegradable line.
"We need to listen to our consumers," she said. "We clearly heard their feedback."

Frito-Lay, a unit of PepsiCo Inc., based in Purchase, N.Y., is developing its next generation of biodegradable bags and will use what it learned with the SunChips effort, she said.

No, you need to tell your consumers to shut the fuck up and close their mouths when they feed from the trough.

Too noisy? Who the fuck do they think they are if their chip bags are too noisy? Fucking douchebags. "Oh let me soften the harsh noise of your chip bag with this wet sponge your majesty." 🙄

Have you actually heard the bag? You can hear someone opening it from 100yds away!

That sucks. Regular bags are noisy too; not quite AS noisy but it's not that big a difference.

I think the bigger problem is that most biodegradable products don't have a chance to biodegrade. A grocery store chain near me (Lunds/Byerly's) has biodegradable flatware and cups in their cafeteria, but they don't provide a place to deposit them so they end up in the trash and they'll get sent to a landfill or incinerator anyway, where they won't be able to decompose. It's all a feel-good stunt.

"WAHHHHHHHHHHHHH IT'S TOO LOUD!!" *stuffs fat face full of chips making loud crunching noise*

Sounds like we need to bring in bags of regular sunchips instead of vuvuzelas at the next sporting event.

There was a thread on here with a link to a petition to pull the bags and people were pro removing the bags in that thread now they pull it and people are WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE TOO???

wut?

I think that's a retarded move.
So now, due to people being bitchy about the noise levels, we'll have more plastic bags laying around for a billion years. Way to go mankind.

Those bags truly were ridiculously loud. The first time I heard it I wanted to stab the dirty Sun Chips eater.

*stuff face with chips* Waaaah, I can't hear the TV with this damn bag rustling in my laps!!!! *stuff face with more chips*

I don't eat chips often, but when I do I just pour some chips into a bag. I deal with 10 seconds of noise and I'm done with it.

They really should keep these bags because I actually think they're a great idea. That said, it is truly amazing just how loud they are. I mean, if I didn't know better I'd say they actually engineered them to make as much noise as possible.

I think what they need here is not a new product, but a new ad campaign: Our green biodegradable bags let others know- in no uncertain terms!- that you really care about the environment. Frito-Lays green potato chip bags, they command the attention you deserve for being green!

Yeah, the bags are ridiculously loud, I don't know how they ever were actually released into stores.

They should be able to come up with a container that is both more biodegradable as well as not a nuisance otherwise.
