My dad is TERRIBLE about getting into situations like that when someone else isn't around to watch him.
A couple years ago, he decided to trim this tree we have in our backyard. Apparently he was in a hurry, because he positioned his ladder in a very dangerous spot. He had it leaning on the tree limb he was cutting (with a chainsaw mind you), but he didn't take into account the fact that when he cut off the part of the branch, it would be lighter and spring up. And the ladder just reached as it was. So he climbs up there, cuts the limb off, promptly realizes what is going to happen, so he throws the chainsaw as far from himself as he could and went down with the ladder. Hurt his shoulder pretty badly, but no broken bones. I think he knicked himself on the finger with the chainsaw too, but that wasn't severe.
I told him if he ever decided to pull an idiotic stunt like that again when I wasn't home, I was going to lock up his chainsaw and keep the key with me. Which is ironic, because that sort of conversation usually goes the other way around 🙂
