Friend's Laptop video dies

My friend is a compter n00b

He said that he was watching a movie yesterday
and the video got all messy and it all went out

The comp still works and the audio was working

It is some sort of
Dell with windows XP

he is going to bring it over so I can check it out

I am not good with laptops as I am with desktops
I told him to try it without the battery

Connect it to a regular monitor and see if you get an image then, if you do it isn't the card, but probably the LCD or cable. If you don't get a graphic chances are it is the video card or cable. A lot of the newer Dell laptops have replaceable video cards these days. My Inspiron 5100 has a replaceable card.

You think it's the ribbon? Have you opened it? Did you look at the ribbon?

There isn't really much you can do unless you're an electrical engineer. If you are, then fix it, because you should know how.

I am typing with the CRT monitor

warrenty expired 03 :\

Go to Dells website and look up the computer model number, and under the support area they have very good repair manuals that will show you how to open and replace or check to make sure the LCD Cable is plugged in... You do not have to be an electrical engineer to repair a laptop.
