Friend's HL2 problems

Long story short, he upgraded from a Ti4400 to a 6600GT and he can't get it to run in DX9 mode. Is there a config file or something he needs to change, or a way he can make the game auto-detect his hardware and use DX9?

Does it run other DirectX 9 content ok, demos or other games? It sure would stink to run HL2 and not get the awesome water effects, especially 😛

Same thing happened to me, I went Ti 4400 to 6600GT and it was stuck on DX8.1.

Reinstalled HL2, reinstalled video drivers, reinstalled DX9c, problem went away.

Well he ran Nalu and a couple other demo's... I assume if DX9 wasn't working period that Nalu wouldn't have worked. I figured reinstalling the game and stuff would help, but I know he won't like that, so I thought if there was another way to do it, it would be nice.

After uninstalling, and reinstalling two times, it still used dx8.1...

CS:S went straight to DX9 after reinstalling it.

I found a config file in C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\aposynthesi\half-life 2\hl2\cfg titled autoexec.cfg which was the problem.

mat_dxlevel was set to 80, so I figured that was 8.0. I switched it to 90, opened up HL2... ta-da!

Thanks for the help guys.
