Friend's dad is bossing me around...

I do my friend's website for his "digital production company" for free which only really consists of him. I did the site for free because his dad is a radio DJ and very well-known in these parts and I was looking for a good reference of my resume and possibly a letter of recommendation for doing the site. The only problem is that Jon, his son, says he likes the layout and everything but then the next day after he's talked to his dad, he comes in saying it sucks.

I'm also writing a screenplay that me and Jon will collaborate on and Jon thinks his dad knows everything in the world so if he says something should be changed, Jon won't work until it is. We've been friends for a long time but this is just getting out of hand. I figure when I hand Jon this script he may like it but his dad will hate it then there goes months of work. Another aspect is that he is directing this movie. He says he won't direct anything that he doesn't agree with which practically makes me his bitch. I've described the script to this board before, it's supposed to be a semi-depressing, existential film about the vanity of life and superficialness of people but is being blown way out of shape by Jon and his father. I will admit that the script lacks the typical basis and path of most films but which is why I believe it will make it unique.

Some things to realize would be that I am obviously a very dark person with dark ideas whereas Jon is a rich, happy person with no hardships or depression. I desire this film to be dark as well but Jon doesn't want it too dark. By the way, the reason I'm having him direct this is because that is the only way I can get this thing going. He has the money, equipment, and people skills to make this happen that I completely lack. I don't have a camera, any real editing skills, or money but I have ideas that he can project and bring to reality should he give me somewhat freedom.

What should I do? Should I just tell him and his dad, 'no'? If I don't write this screenplay for him he'll get severely pissed at me and it's likely our friendship will crumble. This is very complicating and I just don't know what to do to make everyone happy.

tell them both to F off, why does a DJ need to direct your movie, and if you are writing the script for him to take to his daddy, obviously you're doing the writting. Hell I'll direct your movie. All you gotta do is fly me to location and feed me.

P.S. I could prob make you dark depressing movie so depressing you'll want to kill yourself after watching.

If you want someone else to look at your script, shoot me a copy, i'll look it over and give you some input that is probably more inline with what you're writing about.

Why is his dad going to be directning your movie? Do it yourself man!

I don't have a camera or anyway to bring this to life; he is my only "chance".

Well you are using him for his money so what do you expect? He wants something in return as well. Don't think he doesn't know.

You need to establish your parameters in reference to working on the website. Include a closing date for when you will no longer be able to help them.

It doesnt sound like your collaboration on the screenplay is going to work out. The two of you have different views and you are already resenting the compromises.

If they are using the equiptment and money to push you into changing the script, they aren't worth dirt.

You need to realize that you wont be able to make everyone else happy, you need to do what you feel is best for you. And I have to say, if the friendship is at risk of crumbling over this, you are better off without them.

Great advice.

It may not be just the camera that I'm in need of but I'm just scared of trying to do this all alone. It's a big task that takes talent with the equipment as well as the people but has a huge payoff.

You are shooting yourself down before you have even started. How much do you know about movie production?

Good question but all I know is it has to be difficult by yourself. My brother inspired me to get into film but marijuana broke his inspiration and now he doesn't do anything movie related but watch them. He would have been a help but now he's just too busy with work. My dad knows a SH!T load about movies and has pretty good taste in horror so he'd definitely be a good support. But the actual production and shooting of film takes a lot of practice I imagine. I have a few people who could do stuff for me without interfering with my intent but I just hope they don't try and meddle with the script. I don't know...

... have to add this in

He's a DJ and he thinks he knows sh!t about screenplays????
Toss him. There are plenty of other people out there who are into this and will be willing to help you out.
Go to your local college and take some classes. Also, most cities now have community theatres. Go find yours and join. You may start out low, but you will network and learn. You might also consider going to a larger music shop. They'll have all kinds of people posting on boards for lessons, equiptment, you name it they got it. While you're there, sign up to roadie with a band... you'll learn a heck of a lot about sound, lights and other equiptment.
Good Luck!

Whoa, a little eccentric there. Hell, I don't even know if I'm good at making movies, probably not but I have a streak of professionalism in me that really can capture someone's attention. I just need to find a forum about amateur film making and production.

Don't blame the marijuana.. If he has no motivation, the pot smoking is just a side effect. But anyway, let's not turn this into another one of the myriad of drug threads..

It sounds to me like you indeed do have the resources to go it alone. At the most, you can tell them how you feel. At the least, just tell them to fsck off.
