Now this is a weird problem. Every time my friend connects his laptop to the net and starts browsing, his computer makes an incessant looping sound much like a camera shutter closing. He has several viruses which I am working on removing, and I checked in the Sounds icon of Control Panel and nothing selected there matches the sound that is being played. Anyone ever heard of something like this before? A google search isn't much help.

Does this occur everytime he is clicking a link? In the sounds and audio devices control panel, go to the "Sounds" tab, and look unde tthe "Program Events". Find "Windows Explorer" and play the "Start Navigation" sound. Does this sound like the camera shutter? If so turn it off.

It's probably the sound of many ads trying to pop-up from his spyware he most likely has on his machine or his browser trying to be hijacked.

You probably won't get those sounds once you've removed the viruses and check thoroughly for spyware (adaware, spybot, microsoft antispyware tool)

:)

that's what I was thinking, but he wasn't getting any pop-ups, so I checked for the sound of "pop-up" blocked and it was something different. It's moot now, anyway, as he decided to throw in the towel and reformat the hard drive. Now to give him some good antispyware
