Friend's computer is dead...

It just doesn't turn on, according to him, he left the house & it was on, he came home and it was off, and it hasn't turned off since. He says there might have been power surges... the power supply fan doesn't turn on, no parts of the computer turn on, and it's not a problem with the outlet.

What do you think is wrong? Is it the PSU? Might the mobo be fried? I'd really appreciate any help, and so would he.

It could be a variety of things. If this is a custom built system, I would tear it apart and start from the ground up. Testing each piece before ( if possible ) or while you assemble it. This is will locate the trouble pieces. Make sure that his surge protector isn't over a year or so old, b/c the don't protect well after that time period. This is a tedious process so I wish you luck.

If it isn't a custom built system, call tech support!

uhh...what kind of CPU is it?

B/c if it's AMD...and he didnt put the HSF on like PERFECT...it woulda burned out, and the thing wont start.

Tell him to remove the CPU, but leave the fans in. Power-on, see if they start to spin.

If that doesnt do anything...try to swap out the PSU and then the mobo.

He didn't build the system himself, and it's Intel based. It was made by a small dealer using name-brand parts (Asus P3B-F ? is the mobo)... problem is, it's almost 2 years old, and I'm not sure that Stone (the builder) will help him out without charge... I guess we'll see...

If it blew out like that on its own, 99.99% its a PSU.

I get those all the time in the shop.

This happened to my friend about a month ago. I just bought a new power supply for him and the computer is up and running again . I definitely bet its the power supply.

Alot of times, you can test the ATX powersupplies by plugging it in, test for voltage on the Purple wire or the green wire, I don't remember which. You should get 5 volts off one or the other. If you don't, then the PS is dead. If you do, then it could still be bad.
