So we put aside $100 for the OS (actually $80 atm), $150-200 for the monitor+speakers. That leaves $550 for the PC itself.

CPU i3-2100 $125 or i5-2400 $190 ($150 in microcenter)
mobo Biostar H61MGC $37AR
RAM PNY 8GB 1333 $32
GPU PowerColor 6870 $140 AR
HDD Buy this HDD before it runs out of stock: Hitachi 7K1000.D 750GB $70
DVD Samsung DVDRW $16
Case Rosewill Ranger $50 (a steel case with 3 fans and window for that price is pretty awesome)
PSU Corsair CX500V2 $27AR

$497 to 562 AR depending on CPU. If you / your friend has a microcenter nearby then definitely the i5-2400, possibly even i5-2500K $180 + Z68 $60 off.

You can go with i5-2400 and a P67 board as long as it fits the budget. But I googled some and it seems Raleigh NC has a microcenter. Should grab i5-2500K + a cheap Z68 board there if possible.

I think you should change the GPU, PSU and HDD to what I recommended. The RAM costs the same on newegg as amazon, either is fine 🙂. Nice find on the HAF 912 for $50. The Rosewill case does come with an extra 140mm fan though, but overall the HAF is probably a better case.
 
Just a word of caution. That 6870 PowerColor model has had a fair share of posts (Not just from NE either) of it running hot. Make sure the case has a good cooling system.

Good to know. In that case it might be worth it to spend $10 more on a different 6870.

Yeah you're right. I used google maps and it did find something but it wasnt microcenter after all :S
