Friend wants Mac stuff

Can someone tell me where I can get parts to build a Mac PC...friends kid is in school and all they use is the Mac platform so that rules out AMD. This site rarely has Mac parts for sale. Thanks

I think you'll have to get one second hand or refurb. Not sure if you can buy parts individually

1.) eBay
2.) Mac forums, like MacNN forums
3.) LEM swap list
4.) Dealers...(inflated prices)

Options 1, 2, and 3 are probably the best.

Edit: You CAN build your own mac, but from scratch it's not recommended - especially when the Mac Mini is about $500 and when you may pay anywhere from $300-400 upgrading and finding parts, depending on what you want to build.

Your tax dollars at work. :|

Did they specifically ask you to build one, or did you just blurt out that you can build one cheaper? You certainly can, but it ain't going to be a wondrous, overpriced, proprietary Mac!

Most schools have gone to the Mac platform..less problems with service/upkeep etc especially when schools are on a tight budget plus all graphic design schools mainlu use Macs now. I was just asked to look into this since my friends know I build PC's on the side.

Is that so? Does that mean most businesses don't mind extra costs incurred by their PC purchases? I'll give you a hint... They're tighter with money than a fish's ass with water!

ok, then dont get him a mac
if you do then he will be stuck with only knowing macs when he grows up

since he knows macs from school and then could know pc's from home he will be much more able on computers in general

Maybe up there.

All I see in US schools is Dell and maybe a few Macs for the art people.

My school uses macs... Last week we didn't have any computers for Comp Sci because every single one of them had to be sent to Mac Service Dept to fix the hinges! Talk about low down time 😉

edit: I think the older Mac platforms used to have imitation manufacturers but it will be harder to find anything besides RAM and a graphics card for new macs.

There are bigger budgetary problems in the world than how education budgets are spent on computers at schools. MUCH bigger fish.

If you think you are such a budgetary wizard you should go run for office.

Edit: this is like arguing whether pepsi or coke or whether the PS2 is better than the XBox. Each person has their preferences...

OP, you would be best advised to seek advise elsewhere if you want to "build" a Mac...this is a primarily PC forum.

Bigger fish sure, but when you're buying hundreds of computers at a time, it's a HUGE chunk of money. It certainly is NOT Pepsi or Coke, unless you're comparing a 2 liter Coke to a 1 liter Pepsi!

If Macs were better bang for the buck, then that's what businesses would use, BUT THEY DON'T! Schools can buy any frivolous thing they want, because they're spending other people's money... MINE! :|

Most schools? I know of none outside of those that do strictly graphic and video work that have gone just to macs.

Which doesn't make any sense to me, as all the video and graphics work I've done is always faster on my PC than when performed on our department's Macs. And integrating the two network topologies didn't go easily either. I think Trygve uses a PC too, and he makes a living off of it.
