Friend of mine traded Mazda 6 for Prius yesterday

My eco-greentastic friend tried to tell me I needed a Prius when I was shopping for an SUV, and I told him it was very impractical for me to even consider a Prius. He just shrugged and said that everybody has to do their part and it might as well start with me and a Prius.

So now I have my ATV and trailer to tow around, and will be buying a toy hauler in a few more years. Still think that Prius was a wise decision in my case ?
 
The Prius is a great car for commuting to work or grocery shopping. It doesn't matter how much power you have, if you just go from stop light to stop light or stuck in traffics.

When I bought my Prius my commute was 30+ miles each way.. averaged close to 50MPG no matter what I did. When I moved closer and the commute was less than 5 miles, MPG tanked to the low 30s. Mostly cause the car never had a chance to warm up. It's since been sold for something more fun. 😉
 
I have 115 fill ups recorded on fuelly.com and my average is 45.2 right now. I've had the vehicle for almost 2 years and just crossed 47k miles. I don't baby the gas doing that hypermiling or what ever they call it. I pop the bad boy in power mode let em have it at the stop lights.

😵 I never said a Prius was anything in your case... and what kind of idiot would throw away a good friendship over a freaking car?
 
I like my C-Max. It saves me about $1000 a year in gas over what my minivan did. Plus it's quieter on the highway, decked out with some cool gadgets, and is a very well built little-big-car. Also has enough punch to get out of it's own way with little drama.
 
I have not driven, but i have been a passenger in 2 different gen prius and holy crap is the ride uncomfortable. So much noise. It was like everything in the car was rattling, and i felt every single bump in the road. I know they get great gas mileage, but i could not live with one personally after my passenger experiences.

That is one of the things that really appealed to me about the C-Max. It's like riding in a German luxury sedan. The thing is a tomb. It's damn near 1000 pounds heavier than a Prius and I think they put that weight into noise deadening materials and ride quality. It's a rolling bank vault.

I was referring to the stereotype associated with each car. The Fit is a subcompact economy box, and the Mazda6 is a "CamCord" sedan. You generally don't see young people in a "CamCord" unless they inherited it from a relative. 😀

I don't really look at people in other cars close enough to be able to tell their age. There are certain kinds of cars that I know an asshole will be behind the wheel but other than that it is just another shiny metal box in a sea of shiny metal boxes.

edit: wait.... msrp is 29k... msrp of a base volt is 34k

you can buy a new volt from the lot at about 30 with a few options, and a one year old car for around 20.

50% not found.... actually, you can buy a volt cheaper than a plug in prii when similarly optioned!

Nothing wrong with a Prius. That being said I really like the styling of the new Mazda 6. Styling aside, I can see where the Prius would make more sense in most use cases, especially on long boring commutes.

On a side note: It's a shame Mazda doesn't license Toyota's Hybrid technology for their cars to fill this gap.

Well the skyactiv technology is obviously good enough that Toyota is licensing that tech for use in their Yaris as that engine hasn't been updated in over 10 years. Skyactiv technology is pretty much direct injection + headers which allows good scavenging of the exhaust gasses, allowing them to increase the compression ratios to 14:1 for Premium and 13:1 for regular gasoline vehicles. Means more power, better fuel economy.


It's kinda too bad they or any automaker haven't implemented Koenigsegg's Camless engine design which is still being tested.

I guess it's the name that bothers me. It is as though a team of sales people just made up some flowery sounding word and said this is what it means.
